Not being discouraged in practicing the stages. 'Without dependence' means not depending on all things. As before, through the ten purified actions, one will attain the fourth stage, the Radiant Ground. Attachment to friends and family, and, places and people that are bustling, self-praise and disparaging others, and, the ten paths of non-virtuous actions, being filled with pride and perversion, doubt and tolerating afflictions, if these ten are completely abandoned, then the fifth stage will be truly attained. 'Friends' means being close to the wealthy and speaking sweetly in order to gain profit and offerings. 'Attachment to family' means not being close to the homes of faithful patrons. 'Bustling places' means cities and the like that are filled with beings. 'Self-praise and disparaging others' means praising oneself and slandering others. 'The ten paths of non-virtuous actions' means the path of the ten non-virtuous actions. 'Pride' means the arrogance of learning and the like. 'Conceit' means not submitting to others. 'Perversion' means clinging to non-virtue and the like as virtue. 'Doubt' means having doubts about the truth, the Three Jewels, actions, and their results. 'Tolerating afflictions' means relying more on desire, hatred, ignorance, and the like. 'Completely abandoning' means that everything must be combined with the extremes of duality. The Bodhisattva who abandons these ten and abides on the path will attain the fifth stage, the Difficult to Train Ground. Giving, ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom are completely perfected, for disciples and solitary realizers, abandoning the mind of joy and fear, not being discouraged when begging, all possessions, giving away without displeasure, not abandoning begging even in poverty, one will truly attain the sixth stage. That is to say, the six perfections such as giving are completely perfected, which means not abandoning these six dharmas, similarly, being delighted with the Shravakas, being delighted with the Pratyekabuddhas, and, abandoning the mind of fear in being accustomed to accumulating collections for a long time, refers to these three. Never being discouraged, even if all possessions are given away,

Without joy, and not abandoning even the poor who beg, one will attain the manifestation of the sixth ground through these twelve dharmas. Holding to self and sentient beings, life and person, annihilation and permanence, signs and causes, aggregates, elements, and sources, attachment to the three realms, a mind that is completely despondent, the Three Jewels and discipline, thus clinging to views, arguing about emptiness, and the opposite of that, whoever has completely severed these twenty faults will attain the seventh ground. Here, 'holding' means manifest clinging, which should be applied individually to the eleven terms from 'self' to 'sources.' Holding to self, holding to sentient beings, holding to life, holding to person, holding to annihilation, holding to permanence, holding to signs, holding to causes, holding to aggregates, holding to elements, holding to sources—these are the eleven. 'Attachment to the three realms, a mind that is completely despondent' means dwelling in the three realms with the body. Attachment to the three realms is with the mind. 'Sentient beings are completely despondent' refers to both. 'The Three Jewels and discipline, thus clinging to views' means not relying on seeing the Buddha as the Buddha, the Dharma as the Dharma, the Sangha as the Sangha, and discipline as discipline with the objects of grasping and the grasper—these are the four aspects. 'Arguing about emptiness' means arguing about the emptiness of all dharmas, which means doubt. 'The opposite of that' means the opposite of emptiness. Thus, being free from all twenty faults, whoever fully possesses the twenty qualities that will be explained will attain the distant seventh ground. To show who fully possesses the twenty qualities, it is said: Knowing the three doors of liberation, the purity of the three spheres, compassion and humility, the equality of dharmas and knowing one aspect, knowing non-arising and knowing cessation, the one aspect of all dharmas.
