Thinking and investigation, joy and happiness, and single-pointedness of mind, these five are the limbs of the first dhyana. Inner purity, joy and happiness, virtue and single-pointedness of mind, these four are the limbs of the second dhyana. Equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, happiness, and single-pointedness of mind, these five are the limbs of the third dhyana. Completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, suffering and neither suffering nor happiness, and single-pointedness of mind, these four are the limbs of the fourth dhyana. The four formless absorptions are achieved by abandoning desire from the desire realm and the form realm, and focusing on space itself as infinite, hence the sphere of infinite space. Further abandoning desire from that, focusing on consciousness itself as infinite, hence the sphere of infinite consciousness. Further abandoning desire from that, focusing on the absence of anything whatsoever, hence the sphere of nothingness. Then further abandoning desire from that, focusing on neither perception nor non-perception, hence it is called the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. The engagement of cultivating the formless dhyanas should always be accompanied by the intention of having an end. Giving and so on refers to the six perfections as previously stated. The path refers to the path of seeing, the path of cultivation, the path of no more learning, and the special paths. Loving-kindness and so on refers to loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Wishing all sentient beings to have happiness is loving-kindness. Wishing them to be free from suffering is compassion. Wishing them not to be separated from happiness is joy. Wishing them to be free from suffering and to have happiness is equanimity, that is, loving-kindness and so on. Having no object of focus means not focusing on any object of grasping or being grasped, it is the nature of focusing on non-duality. The purity of the three spheres means that the giver, the object of giving, and the act of giving are purified by appearing separately like a dream. To do specifically means to do the best for all sentient beings.
