Regarding the Tathāgatas and others, depending on them, merely through the realization of one's own path, one discerns the manner in which others proceed. 'The purpose is reversed,' means that due to the absence of compassion, one discerns the reversal of the purpose of what has been grasped, as it is said. 'The near one' means that having abandoned the obscurations of afflictions, merely realizing the path is the discernment of the near one. 'The variousness' means that realizing the first fruit and so forth is the discernment of the variousness. 'Ignorance of place and entry' means that being ignorant of dwelling and arising in the happy and unhappy realms is the discernment of not knowing place and entry. 'Following after' means that because one does not fully know oneself, following after the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is the discernment of following after, which is the ninefold division of the second object-discernment. These objects should also be known as what Bodhisattvas should abandon, as they are the category of sleep. Regarding the question of how the initial discernments, which are apprehended by ordinary beings as being present, become nine, it is said: 'Grasping and individual liberation, attention and the elements, all three are closely related, place and manifest clinging, the imputed entity of phenomena, decrease and antidote, as one wishes to go astray, know the first as grasping.' This means that the grasping to be abandoned in the state of perfect union of the path of meditation, grasping the nature of what is present, and there are nine dharmas such as liberation, and their discernment is also the ninefold discernment of grasping. Because it is completely abandoned by the noble ones, it is the dharma of ordinary beings. In that, samadhi and individual liberation, means that the nature of what is substantially mine, the lovely and unlovely, my taking and complete abandonment, are the discernments of grasping and individual liberation. Thus, in others as well, because it is done by my own power, in everything that is to be accomplished, one should see how it is appropriate. 'Attention and' means that whatever meaning is discerned, attending to it is the discernment of attention. The elements, three
