Merely having awareness and considering it as "self" is not a valid perception. It is also not an inference because there is no basis. If the knowledge that arises from a basis regarding a hidden object is inference, then there is no basis whatsoever for the "self" that needs to be proven. If it is said that memory and so on are the basis, that is not correct, because they are not directly related to the "self" and are impermanent, therefore they are negated by valid cognition. Memory and so on are natures that are subject to destruction, and are incompatible with the "self" that is conceived as a nature that does not naturally perish, and its own nature. If mutually contradictory natures are the same, then there would be no difference whatsoever, and therefore all beings would fall into a state where there is no concept of difference and non-difference. Memory and so on are also not the result of the "self", because they arise sequentially. Because the "self" as the cause is a constant and singular nature, it is unreasonable for a result with sequential order to arise depending only on it, since it does not possess sequential order. If it is said that the inner "self" acts simultaneously, relying on the proximate cause that has sequential order, and produces its own result solely through sequential order, so the result is sequential, that is not correct. Because the constant itself cannot exert influence, as it does not depend on anything else. Even if it is thought that it can exert influence, the influence is of the same nature as it, therefore if influence is exerted, it would lead to the situation where the "self" is influenced, and even then, the "self" is not constant. If the influence is different from the "self", then, like memory and so on, the relationship is unreasonable, and it would also lead to an endless situation. Therefore, the so-called "self" exerting influence, which does not depend on the proximate cause, and acts simultaneously while benefiting other things, because it is devoid of sequential order, memory and so on, which depend only on it, would arise simultaneously. If that were the case, then in the second moment and so on, since there is no continuation of faults such as desire, all beings would attain the perfection of nirvana without effort, because desire and so on are also produced by the "self", so those uncertain things would also arise simultaneously.

It is because of arising. Even so, I am still impermanent, because that discernment that gives rise to previous memories, etc., will not do so even after a moment. At that time, it is also not a real thing, because the characteristic of a real thing is the ability to function. Just as seeing two moons, etc., those that are separated from the function of external form itself are also not established as real things. This causes the aggregates, etc., to lose the aspect of permanence. It should be understood that the object of clinging to self is prevented, because it will be said below that those characteristics such as oneness are unreasonable. Now, if there is no self, etc., then how does the term "this is me," "this is mine" apply to all things? How can the yogis who have attained the knowledge of cessation and non-arising, the thought that "my defilements are exhausted," etc., be well established? That is not the case, because there is no connection with clinging to self, etc., and "having." If something is well connected with something, then it will not arise only when that thing is excluded, but clinging to self, etc., is also not established as connected with self, which has already been explained in detail earlier. For the unexamined, single joy that appears as aggregates, etc., at the time of arising, how is it the cause as seen? Considering this, the Blessed One also said: 'Monks, wherever people think "I" or "mine," those who correctly follow the observation are truly following the observation of these five aggregates of grasping.' If the aggregates, etc., are not the nature of self, etc., then how can they be the object of the consciousness of self, etc.? Precisely for this reason, since there is no object of its consciousness, it is an illusion. If this is not the case, if the existence of the object itself is unique, then for all consciousnesses, the terms illusion and non-illusion are unreasonable. If this is an illusion, then how do those who realize Suchness act? It is not so, because they are not completely deluded about its characteristics. Depending on being more attached to completely grasping other natures, the consciousnesses that want to appear as illusions are mis
