These are the deeds of Mara. All virtuous practices without skillful means are also the deeds of Mara. Holding the secret words of worldly Lokayata without seeking the Bodhisattva Pitaka is also the deed of Mara. Although having heard much, the teacher hides the examples of the Dharma for fear that others will know, is also the deed of Mara. Attending to worldly needs and not seeking to hear much is also the deed of Mara. Not attending to and not respecting those who have truly entered the great path of the Bodhisattva Dharma-speaker and have equal fortune, but rejoicing in those who have truly entered the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicle and do not have equal fortune, is also the deed of Mara. Whenever Indra, Brahma, world protectors, kings, merchants, or householders have the greatness of enjoyment, wealth, jewels, and power, at that time, not attending to and not respecting those who possess the greatness of Dharma, these are the twenty kinds of Mara's deeds of the sons of the gods, the Bodhisattvas, so it is said. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Great Vehicle called "The Question of the Holy Naga King Anavatapta," it is also said that disrespecting the lamas is the deed of Mara. Making manifest pride by speaking of oneself is also the deed of Mara. Abandoning the path of the Bodhisattva Pitaka Paramita is also the deed of Mara. Holding the secret words of worldly people and worldly Lokayata, and the sutras corresponding to the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicle, is the deed of Mara. Wisdom without skillful means, skillful means without wisdom, obtaining meditation with little hearing, and praising oneself even though having heard much, are the deeds of Mara. Taking rebirth away from the root of virtue, and desiring the small vehicle even though having accumulated the root of virtue, are the deeds of Mara. Not protecting the sacred Dharma and not maturing sentient beings are the deeds of Mara. Being angry with Bodhisattvas and not praising Dharma speakers are also the deeds of Mara. Abandoning the root of virtue that has been properly taken, and accepting the mind of non-virtue, are also the deeds of Mara. Even though dwelling in solitude, being attached to desires, and having

And, entering into the assembly of retinues, but being surrounded by gain and respect, this is the activity of Mara. Teaching the Dharma to those who are not vessels, and despising those who have become vessels, is also the activity of Mara. If such activities of Mara are not understood, and if one is distracted from the mind of omniscient wisdom, that is also the activity of Mara, and so on. In short, in the Sutra of the Miraculous Manifestation of Noble Manjushri, it is said: In short, to the extent that there is wavering, arrogance, proliferation, and dualistic thought, to that extent it is the activity of Mara. It should be understood from the point of view of meaning. Furthermore, it is said in the same text that the activity of Mara for the son of the gods, the Bodhisattva, should be understood as arising from diligence. Therefore, it should be understood that the activities of Mara will arise at the time of diligent practice. Having recognized these, the way to avert them is as stated in the chapter of the Noble One Who Has Gone Beyond the World: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the means by which Bodhisattvas avert the activities of Mara. What are the ten? Thus, in order to attend to and honor virtuous friends, completely abandoning all pride is to avert the activities of Mara. Not praising or extolling oneself is to avert the activities of Mara. Having faith in the profound Dharma of the Buddhas and not abandoning it is to avert the activities of Mara. Not allowing the mind of omniscient wisdom to completely deteriorate is to avert the activities of Mara. Diligently engaging in the conduct of the profound Dharma and abiding in mindfulness is to avert the activities of Mara. Abiding in the Bodhisattva's collection of scriptures and completely seeking all the Dharmas is to avert the activities of Mara. Repeatedly listening and not being weary of truthful speech is to avert the activities of Mara. In all the realms of the world, having the thought of seeking refuge and assistance from all the Tathagatas who abide there is to avert the activities of Mara. In practice, remembering the blessings of all the Buddhas and properly taking faith is to avert the activities of Mara. Manifestly accomplishing the roots of virtue without duality with all the Bodhisattva's friends is to avert the activities of Mara. O sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the means by which Bodhisattvas avert the activities of Mara. Through these
