This is the instruction of the virtuous friend. As it is said in the chapter of the Noble One Who Has Gone Beyond the World: "O sons of the Victorious One, these ten are the demons of the Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? They are: Because of manifest attachment, the demon of the aggregates; because of becoming an opportunity, the demon of the afflictions; because of obscuration, the demon of karma; because of begging, the demon of the mind; because of causing separation from what is born with, the demon of doubt; because of wavering and arrogance, and acting without restraint, the demon of the son of the gods; because of attachment to that, the demon of the root of virtue; because of causing one to experience taste, the demon of samadhi; because of being an image, the demon of the virtuous friend; because of not accomplishing aspirations, the demon of penetrating the wisdom of the Dharma. O sons of the Victorious One, these ten are the demons of the Bodhisattvas, and in order to completely abandon these, Bodhisattvas should strive." Again, as it says in the same text: "O sons of the Victorious One, these ten are the activities of the demons of the Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? They are: All virtuous roots that are initiated to cause the mind of enlightenment to decline are the activities of demons. Completely giving away generosity that does not cause the mind to decline, being completely angry with those who break their vows, completely abandoning those who have malice, completely abandoning the lazy, despising those whose minds are disturbed, and scolding those who have perverse wisdom are the activities of demons. Concealing the teacher's instructions on the Dharma, hiding them, despising the vessel of the Dharma, and teaching the Dharma in connection with material possessions are the activities of demons. Teaching the vast Dharma to those who are not vessels is the activity of demons. Not hearing the Paramitas, and after hearing them, leading them astray, and after leading them astray, being lazy, and after being lazy, causing the mind to be discouraged, and after the mind has become discouraged, not arising with the mind that possesses the vast path of enlightenment and the Dharma that arises from the mind, are the activities of demons. Relying on evil friends, completely abandoning virtuous friends, desiring the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and not rejoicing in the source of birth,

Nirvana, freedom from attachment, and the near pacification of the mind are the deeds of demons. To have thoughts of anger towards Bodhisattvas, to speak unpleasant words, to create obstacles to attainment, to seek faults in delusion, and to look with displeasing eyes are the deeds of demons. Abandoning the sacred Dharma, hearing sutras that have not been heard and then slandering them, not liking to listen to the Dharma spoken by other Dharma speakers, despising and belittling them, praising oneself and disparaging others are the deeds of demons. Seeking worldly amusements, delighting in self-made fabrications in various letters and various grains, recalling the words of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, concealing and hiding profound words, widely proclaiming various words, teaching the profound Dharma to those who are not vessels, not seeking the path of Bodhi, and abiding in the continuum of evil paths are the deeds of demons. Relying on, being close to, honoring, and serving those who are liberated, who have transcended, and who have expired, but not relying on, not being close to, not honoring, and not serving those who are not liberated, who have not transcended, and who have not expired, not causing them to mature, falling into pride of accomplishment, not submitting to anyone, and causing arrogance to increase, being angry with sentient beings

are the blessings of Mara. Cutting the cycle of samsara is the blessing of Mara. Turning away from conduct is the blessing of Mara. Not bringing sentient beings to maturity is the blessing of Mara. Doubting the Dharma and abandoning the sacred Dharma is the blessing of Mara. O sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the blessings of Mara. Having completely abandoned these, Bodhisattvas will attain the unsurpassed blessing. Thus it was said. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Manifestations of the Noble Manjushri, it is also said: O sons of the gods, these twenty are the deeds of Mara for Bodhisattvas. What are the twenty? They are as follows: To attend to, rely on, and venerate those yogis who desire liberation and are afraid of samsara is the deed of Mara. To discriminate emptiness and abandon sentient beings is also the deed of Mara. To discriminate the unconditioned and be completely weary of the roots of virtue of the conditioned is also the deed of Mara. To cultivate meditation and seek to turn away from meditation is also the deed of Mara. To teach the Dharma but not generate great compassion for those who listen to the Dharma is also the deed of Mara. To seek those who possess qualities and are worthy of giving, but to be angry with those who are immoral is also the deed of Mara. To tell stories of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but to conceal the stories of the Great Vehicle is also the deed of Mara. To conceal profound stories, but to tell various stories is also the deed of Mara. Bodhisattvas know the path, but do not seek the path of the Perfection of Wisdom is also the deed of Mara. To praise diligence, but not encourage sentient beings who are not diligent is also the deed of Mara. Roots of virtue and so forth, but not manifesting the mind of enlightenment is also the deed of Mara. To abide in the yoga of higher seeing, but not allow sentient beings to correctly grasp higher seeing is also the deed of Mara. To seek the exhaustion of all defilements, but to revile the defilements in the cycle of samsara is also the deed of Mara. To discriminate with wisdom, but not to hold onto the focus on great compassion is also
