Disrespect towards the gurus is the work of demons. Arrogance arising from self-assertion is also the work of demons. Abandoning the path of the Bodhisattva's Pitaka, the Perfection of Wisdom, is also the work of demons. Holding onto the secret words of worldly affairs and worldly gossip, and the sutras containing the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles, is the work of human demons. Wisdom without skillful means, and skillful means without wisdom, attaining meditation with little learning, and praising oneself even with much learning, are the works of demons. Taking rebirth separated from the roots of virtue, and desiring the Lesser Vehicle even after accumulating roots of virtue, are the works of demons. Not protecting the sacred Dharma, and not maturing sentient beings, are the works of demons. Being angry with Bodhisattvas, and not praising the virtues of Dharma speakers, are also the works of demons. Abandoning the roots of virtue that have been properly taken up, and accepting non-virtuous thoughts, are also the works of demons. Dwelling in solitude yet desiring pleasures, and having thoughts of harm and injury, and being surrounded by gain and honor even when entering the assembly of the sangha, are the works of demons. Teaching the Dharma to those who are not vessels, and despising those who are capable vessels, are also the works of demons. Not understanding such works of demons, and being distracted from the mind of omniscience, are also the works of demons. Thus, and so on, it was taught. In short, as it is said in the Sutra of the Emanation of Noble Manjushri: In short, to the extent that there is wavering, arrogance, proliferation, and dualistic thought, to that extent is the work of demons. One should understand according to the meaning of this. Furthermore, in that very sutra it is said: Son of the gods, the work of demons for Bodhisattvas should be understood as arising from diligence. Therefore, one should know that the works of demons arise at the time of diligent practice. Having recognized these, in order to avert them, as it is said in the chapter of the Noble One Who Has Gone Beyond the World: O sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the means by which Bodhisattvas avert the works of demons. What are the ten? Thus, completely abandoning all arrogance for the sake of attending upon and serving virtuous friends is the means of averting the works of demons. Not

Not praising praise is averting the works of demons. Believing in and not abandoning the profound Dharma of the Buddha is averting the works of demons. Not allowing the mind of omniscience to completely deteriorate is averting the works of demons. Diligently engaging in the practice of the profound Dharma and abiding with mindfulness is averting the works of demons. Abiding in the bodhisattva's treasury and completely seeking all Dharmas is averting the works of demons. Repeatedly listening and not being weary of truthful words is averting the works of demons. In all realms of the world, having the thought of seeking refuge and assistance from all the Tathagatas who abide is averting the works of demons. In practice, remembering the blessings of all the Buddhas and properly receiving faith is averting the works of demons. Manifestly practicing without being separate from the roots of virtue of all bodhisattva friends is averting the works of demons. O sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the averting of the works of demons for bodhisattvas, and they will cause bodhisattvas to transcend all the works of demons. Thus it was said. The meaning of the words of one's own treatise is easy to understand, so it is not explained in detail. Now, beginning with the essence of the three times of omniscience, which the bodhisattva has well entered, in order to explain the verses that show the nature of this Mother of the Buddhas, as many as there are, the nature of those is spoken of below the faults, thus it is connected. Among them, "those" refers to the bodhisattva practitioner, or to those three times of omniscience. "Nature" refers to one's own nature and the nature of distinguishing one's own nature and differences. The nature of distinguishing is that, for example, pots and so on are not conches and so on, like this, even a single object is expressed by the power of countless negations. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Why all things, by their own nature, abide in their own essence, from similar other things, are dependent on negation." Thus it is taught. And like the praise that says, "Seeing the other shore of the profound Dharma like the ocean."
