Extensive Explanation of the Meaning of the Limbs. Extensive Explanation of the Meaning of the Limbs. Explanation of the First Chapter. Thus, having shown all the meanings that have been condensed, since a Bodhisattva wishes to attain enlightenment, and because it is the fruit, it is necessary to attain all-knowingness. Therefore, first, with the verses that gather all-knowingness, it is intended to explain through the door of differentiation, as it is said. Realizing all-knowingness, if the knowledge of the path is not fully known, it is not possible, so it is said to be the knowledge of the path. Then again, without fully knowing all the bases well, it is not possible to know the path well, so it is said to be all-knowingness. And after that, because fully knowing the three all-knowingnesses is the cause of empowerment, and again through the door of gathering all aspects, the path, and the knowledge of the base, the three all-knowingnesses are meditated upon, so it is said to be the complete realization of all aspects. After that, in order to make it easy to understand, it is said that from the complete realization of all aspects arises the realization that is the ultimate perfection. Preceded by the designation of signs and so forth, the peak realization is spoken of. And then, from obtaining the peak realization, the meanings of realizing the individual and the collective are taken in order, and in order to make it stable, it is meditated upon, so the gradual realization is spoken of. After that, the gradual realization is meditated upon because of the extreme familiarity with those, so it is said to be the enlightenment in one instant because of meditating in one instant. Thus, having shown all the causes, from the second instant of meditating on the enlightenment in one instant, it is said that the Dharmakaya enlightenment is manifested, so the reasons for the definite order are stated in order, and I have compiled them all at once because it is less laborious and easy to remember. If it is said that in those sutras, isn't it taught with a very large number of chapters? How does the venerable one make such a summary of the meaning in so many chapters? The meaning of the summary is also shown to be a collection of one.

Now, if asked why it is not done in nine or so chapters? The reason why there are so many chapters in that sutra is to show that even those who are extremely inferior can gradually enter by writing or reciting even one chapter. It is like the teaching that even if one receives just one verse from another. For those who possess the nature of a Bodhisattva, it is said that they should receive it completely, and "completely obtaining the mother of all Buddhas" is also counted as one of the merits. Therefore, in the verses, the venerable one elaborately explained the eight stages and so on, in order to prevent the disciples from being confused about the meaning of the Abhisamayalankara. It is meaningless to summarize it into nine or so chapters, because brevity is praised when elaborating, and extreme detail is praised when analyzing after summarizing. If it is divided into nine or so chapters, what merit will be gained compared to the already explained eight stages? Therefore, it is certain that it was not divided into nine or so chapters because it is meaningless. The term "generating the mind" (bodhicitta), some consider it to mainly show the mind generation itself, that is, aspiration and so on. Some consider it to be the companion that increases the mind generation, that is, generosity and so on. Some consider it to be the result of mind generation, that is, the one path and so on. The term "object" (alambana) refers to what is to be desired, that is, the perfect and complete enlightenment that is to be sought. It is like the teaching, "The object is what should be accomplished." The term "own nature" is indicated by "desire," which will be explained below. Why is it desired? It is indicated by "for the sake of others." Therefore, a Bodhisattva possesses the mind of wishing to benefit sentient beings, so he possesses the mind of enlightenment, and therefore also obtains the name of Bodhisattva. Therefore, that is what is called generating the mind. The term "aspiration" (pranidhi) is merely aspiration, and the accumulation of merit has not yet been done to receive the accumulation of the mind of enlightenment. The term "entering" (prasthana) refers to what arises from properly receiving after pleasing the virtuous friend.
