If so, why wouldn't it become the four-instantaneous Abhisambodhi? There is no fault in this. According to the first explanation, the first and second, etc., are merely stating the order in which the numbers are shown. If considered from the perspective of meaning, then the first, etc., would not be mentioned. According to the second explanation, there is also no fault. Because children only gain mastery over time in a single instant, those will also transform into the time of four instants. If one thinks so, then even a single instant will be blessed to be like a kalpa, as it is said. If that is the case, there is no fault in contemplating with the order of four instants, and also in the presence of the Bhagavan, the great lord of manifest wisdom, it is said that the Abhisambodhi of one instant should be meditated on for fifty kalpas in between. Then, at that time, how will this not become a gradual Abhisamaya? For the first five stages, such as Sarvakarajnata, the path of accumulation, etc., were not seen before, and for the meanings that were seen, each one should be meditated on for a long time, which is the state of each individual, not a gradual Abhisamaya. In the case of gradual Abhisamaya, like the swift force of piercing a hundred lotus petals, the way in which the paths previously seen, together with their fruits, enter in sequence, abandoning the previous order, etc. With the immediate entry, the subsequent order is also contemplated with the yoga of mindfulness. Because each order does not remain for a long time, it is gradual, and the very rapid sequential realization is gradual. In terms of the seventh stage, using the example of a person offering to a wall, contemplating in that order is not the same as both. Rather, the meanings previously contemplated are all gathered together, and the general characteristics of those are realized simultaneously without interruption, and even if it seems like it takes a long time, it is repeatedly directed towards a single contemplation, because it is not sequential as before, so this is established as a nature different from gradual Abhisamaya.

In "non-Vipāka Anāsrava," Vipāka is of three types: the first bhūmi has Lokottara Vipāka, the eighth bhūmi has Anābhoga Vipāka, and the Buddha-bhūmi has Acintya and Anābhoga Vipāka. In these, all dharmas mature differently from the previous state, hence they are called Vipāka. Therefore, what is called "non-Vipāka" refers to all phenomena that appear, which are not generated in the stream of the Path of Seeing and are included in the grasper and the grasped, all of which are called non-Vipāka. What is called "Anāsrava" refers to the fact that, in terms of their object of engagement, even if they are Vipāka, the nature of these dharmas is Anāsrava. As it is said, "Although a child does not understand Bodhi, it still abides in it." This is the meaning. Here, "āsrava" refers to both conceptualization and afflictions. Second, the Vi-

In order to refute the views of those who hold to a self. The self and the ālaya-vijñāna, etc., are taught and examined in this way, based on the dharmadhātu as the basis of thought. As it is said in the scriptures, from beginningless saṃsāra, childish beings, due to their attachment to the appearance of "I" and "mine," excessively speculate on countless differences of the self. These secret lords, without examining the nature of the self, give rise to the clinging to "I am." Others, such as those that arise from time, are emanated by the clinging one, or necessarily arise, such as: Īśvara, the giver, time, the lord, the agent, the non-agent, yoga, valid cognition, pure, impure, the inner self, puruṣa, pervader, life, person, consciousness, ālaya-vijñāna, knower, seer, object, subject, knowledge, object of knowledge, that which should be known, born of power, son of power, that which should be spoken, speaker, that which should not be spoken, etc. The secret lords, the yogis, desiring liberation, have previously examined such differences of the self. It is like what is said in the scriptures. This is in order to realize without difference that all phenomena, both mundane and supramundane, are without characteristics. Therefore, the third, "without characteristics," is mentioned. Characteristics are the unique nature of each phenomenon, such as thinness, coldness, awareness, matter, etc., each of their own characteristics without remainder. The term "without" means that in the ultimate sense, it cannot be measured by reason, so it is said to be without. But it is not like a rabbit's horn, which does not exist at all. If not examined, they appear as pleasing illusions, but the characteristics of each of these phenomena are manifest. Thus, these without characteristics are also like the different entities, such as thinness and heat, etc., which are different from each other, and are merely abiding apart from their own existing characteristics, so it should be understood. Because the ultimate is the common characteristic of all phenomena. Thus, without thinking in this way, the fourth is taught as "the characteristic of non-duality." That is to say, the emptiness of form and
