What are the ten? Like this, because there is no deceit or pretense, to seek the Dharma wholeheartedly; because diligence is without laziness, to seek the Dharma with diligence; to seek the Dharma without regard for body and life; not for gain and respect and fame, but to seek the Dharma in order to abandon the afflictions of all beings; not for the sake of benefiting only oneself, but to seek the Dharma for the sake of benefiting oneself, others, and all beings; not for the sake of deciding with the light of the Dharma, but to seek the Dharma in order to enter wisdom; not for the sake of delighting in superficial understanding, but to seek the Dharma in order to rely completely; because the mind of enlightenment is not abandoned, to seek the Dharma for the sake of compassion for sentient beings; in order to be free from drowsiness and sleep, to seek the Dharma for the sake of cutting off the doubts of all sentient beings; because there is no arrogance and desire, to seek the Dharma in order to perfect the Buddha's Dharma, these are (the ten). When seeking the Dharma completely in this way, one should abide closely with the virtuous friend, the Dharma speaker, with ten kinds of aspiration. As it is said: O sons of the Victorious Ones, Bodhisattvas, whoever generates the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, should also serve, respect, and attend to virtuous friends in order to manifestly realize the wisdom of omniscience. When serving, respecting, and attending to virtuous friends, one should generate these ten kinds of aspiration towards virtuous friends. What are the ten? Like this, the mind of service, the mind of joy, the mind of diligence as instructed, the mind of not being subdued, the mind of not thinking anything about reproaches and cycles of existence, the mind of single-minded determination, the mind of making everything into a single lineage with virtuous roots, the mind of the same aspiration, the mind of the teacher, and the mind of completely perfecting the same conduct.

These ten bodhisattvas are the manifestation of listeners generating faith in the virtuous spiritual friends. When these ten kinds of faith are generated, one will attain ten kinds of complete purification, and so on. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Queen of Victory, it is said that if there is contradiction between the speaker and the listener of the Dharma, it will turn into the work of demons, and even endanger life. Even when facing the danger of life, the disciple should not disobey the teachings of the virtuous spiritual friend, but should sacrifice his own life. Just like the story of the Brahmin king's warm-born son, the noble Norzang, who was instructed to jump into the great fire pit, it should be understood in this way as well. Furthermore, the listener of the Dharma should abide by fourteen common codes of conduct. As it is said in the Noble Extensive Meaning Sutra: "O fortunate ones, those who wish to listen to the Dharma should listen to the Dharma in fourteen ways. That is: listening at the right time, listening with respect, listening without resentment, listening according to the instructions, not finding fault, respecting the Dharma, not despising the Dharma, not despising the speaker of the Dharma, not despising oneself, with a single-pointed mind, with a mind to know everything, listening attentively, listening with concentration, and listening with all one's mind thinking." Thus it is said. If one listens to the Dharma in this way, is it good or bad? The virtuous spiritual friend will observe for a long time and judge. If he truly possesses the complete qualities, then he should bestow the essence of this Queen of Victory Sutra. Because in the beginning, one might display false qualities. Considering this: "This world is not well disciplined, most people only pretend to be disciplined. If one does not observe carefully, one cannot distinguish the true from the false. Do not believe just because you see the appearance a few times. Like copper covered with paint, or iron powder covered with gold. The heart is full of malice, but the appearance pretends to be noble. This world is like this, full of deception." Thus it is said. The Acharya will also explain below that a Bodhisattva needs a long time to truly satisfy the virtuous spiritual friend.
