If one does not achieve enlightenment by meditating in the manner of "doing," is it not the case that one cannot achieve enlightenment? If one doubts how it accomplishes that task, and also fears that the previous half of enlightenment does not exist, then in order to dispel this doubt, it is said, "If that is the case," and so on. One should analyze in this way: For the time being, enlightenment arises from the mind that has become prior and subsequent. Then, is each of the prior and subsequent minds, or many minds gathered simultaneously, or the mind that arises sequentially, the cause of enlightenment? There are these three ways of examining. The first view is that it is not reasonable to think that each mind can achieve enlightenment. Why? Because each of the prior and subsequent minds cannot accomplish the enlightenment of the Buddha, that is, the non-conceptual wisdom, and all the meanings such as omniscience, which were previously mentioned. Because it is impossible for one mind to have multiple objects. This is his intention. The second view, which is clear, is that many minds also cannot achieve enlightenment, which is connected to what was said earlier. How is it? That is, the mind that appears to accomplish the desired meaning arises simultaneously. The desired meaning is enlightenment. Where, the many minds that appear to accomplish that task arising simultaneously, cannot achieve enlightenment. This is the conclusion. Why? Because it is impossible. Because multiple discriminations do not arise at one time. Even if experience is established, this is to eliminate some inverted views, that is, this is an approximate establishment of discrimination. The scriptures say, "Each consciousness of beings is a cause," therefore it is said in this way, because it is impossible for multiple discriminations to arise simultaneously. This is what is said. Therefore, the heart of beings is one discrimination. This is the conclusion. Therefore, the author of the Pramāṇavārttika also said, "Two discriminations are not at one time." The third way of examining is that it is not sequential either, it is said in this way, because the prior and subsequent minds that were previously mentioned,

If that is the case, then attaining Bodhi is unreasonable, which is related to the previous statement. If asked, how is it unreasonable? That is, what enables the accomplishment of the unsurpassed Buddha's Bodhi is the mindfulness and so forth, and the way of realizing and knowing the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, and understanding its own nature as illusory, is like that. If asked, why is attaining Bodhi unreasonable? Then, as mentioned before, that mind that is spoken of, naturally arises and immediately disintegrates, which has no follower, because it is causeless, and its own thing is like that. Therefore, because there is no connection between them, that is, one has no connection with the other. Therefore, the cause becomes special, through generating the mind that manifests the characteristics of mindfulness and so forth, just like the characteristic of accomplishing Bodhi, it is a reasonable thing. The so-called "unreasonable" is for the sake of others. In this way, if the aggregates of previous and subsequent minds can accomplish Bodhi, then the aggregate is also non-existent, because it disintegrates immediately after arising, I think so. The so-called "that is not correct" refers to whichever of the three examinations, those are not good, this is what the proponent of a tenet says. The explanation of the verses such as "lamp" and so on, is like what was said before. Here there are also two examinations, that is, whether the flame and the wick burn each in successive moments, or whether they burn the wick after contact. In order to refute the first view, it is like what was said before. The flame is the flame of the lamp. The wick is well known. These moments of contact are the characteristics of aggregation, the first is able to burn, that is, without a second moment, the flame is the burner, therefore it is the cause, and the wick is the one being burned, therefore it is the result, this is logical, this is the nature of the characteristic. Whatever is the burner and the one being burned, the flame and the wick, are the burner and the one being burned themselves,
