Just as a teacher might regard the doctrine of permanence as the doctrine of impermanence, or like knowing the water of a mirage as real water, such a doctrine is unreasonable. The noble Maitreya, with his own self-aware wisdom, observes that in order to eliminate the attachment to appearances of things and non-things in beginningless existence, he has mastered the reasoning with compassion. The so-called "path of seeing" refers to the inner non-Buddhists who believe that their afflictions have ceased and will not arise again. Their knowledge of cessation and non-arising is actually the very nature of afflictions and other things. Therefore, there is no cessation and non-arising, which is the nature of unobstructedness and irreversibility. Because of attachment to the appearance of things, one does not fully understand one's own nature. It should be understood that this is the fault arising from it. So what fault will arise? It is the so-called "discrimination" and so on. The category of discrimination is the nature of discrimination. What has ceased? It is cessation. Or, what form will the nature of discrimination, the unborn state, attain? That is to say, what will the unborn dharma produce? Nothing will be produced. If afflictions cease, then the discrimination arising from them will also cease. If it is said that way, then with the measure just mentioned, the nature of afflictions and so on, guided by the way that conforms to the nature of things, and the nature of understanding cessation and non-arising, is because of attachment to the appearance of things, not understanding one's own nature, so the inner non-Buddhists do not understand. Therefore, because one does not understand the nature of afflictions, how can one completely cease afflictions and so on with the path of seeing? Even if it ceases, how can the successive discriminations arising from it cease? Because if the cause exists, then the cessation of the effect does not exist anywhere. With this thought, the meaning of the verses explaining the intention of the noble Maitreya is "born and" and so on. Born and unborn in order, that is, the complete destruction of born afflictions and so on is cessation, and the prevention of the arising of unborn afflictions and so on is the close acquisition of

Because of being without essence, it is unborn, and whatever cessation of the characteristics of these is, it is the very fruit of the path of seeing, and those are what are desired. Being separate from that is what is spoken of as 'truly,' etc. 'Truly' is the very truth, and because it is what can be analyzed and examined, the nature of suchness is self-nature, and it is the self-nature of the nature of the element of phenomena. 'You who are wrongly attached to things' means you who are wrongly attached to the appearances of things. 'By the power of the path of seeing' is as previously explained. 'What is exhausted by being born from the nature of discriminations, etc.?' means what discriminations, such as afflictions, and what habitual tendencies arising from what cease. 'What is born of the unborn, which is of the nature of non-arising?' Since there is no birth, there is nothing at all, and therefore, 'you who are attached to non-existence,' because the path of seeing is not the nature of a path. Because of this reason, only our own tenets should be accepted, because only the characteristic of the selflessness that pervades is reasonably the path to enlightenment, so please rely on it, it is thought. It is the thought of the noble Maitreya. After truly acknowledging things, to eliminate the fault of not having enlightenment as previously explained is not so, etc., is spoken. 'Not so' means abandoning our own tenets, and if you acknowledge that phenomena truly exist, if you claim that forms, etc., truly exist, then, O Bhagavan, the afflictions and cognitions of the perfect Buddha are as previously explained. That itself is an obscuration as before, and the cessation of those having been abandoned is, in every way, a place of wonder, and it is wonderful, and this is impossible, the intervening verses are what are spoken of as 'phenomena also,' etc. 'Phenomena,' i.e., forms, etc., 'also exist,' and if you truly acknowledge that, 'for the knowable also,' i.e., for what is apprehended also, there is obscuration, and it shows the exhaustion and cessation of discriminations, etc.
