Because the path of meditation is perfected, the afflictions are sudden, so there is no fault as previously stated. Therefore, it should be understood that the arising of the "antidote" also has no end. The author of the Commentary on Valid Cognition also said: "Therefore, real and unreal, diligently meditate on any dharma, when the power of meditation is perfected, that clear non-conceptual wisdom is the result." This is what is said. Therefore, hearing and meditating on the Prajnaparamita are meaningful. The Ornament of the Sutras says: "If meaning could be seen by merely hearing, then meditation would become meaningless; if one could enter meditation without hearing, then reliance would become meaningless." Therefore, one should strive to hear, contemplate, and meditate, because they have distinctions. If it is not accomplished, then nothing can be accomplished. In this way, if meditation is not accomplished, wouldn't enlightenment not be accomplished? Then, how can it accomplish meaningful things? Because of this thought, in order to dispel the doubt that the first half has no enlightenment, it is said "even if that is so," and so on. It should be analyzed in this way: for the time being, enlightenment arises from the previous and subsequent minds. Regarding this, is each of the previous and subsequent minds, or many minds gathered simultaneously, or the minds arising in sequence, the cause of enlightenment? There are these three ways of examining. The first case is that it is not reasonable to say that each mind can accomplish enlightenment. Why? Because each of the previous and subsequent minds cannot accomplish the Buddha's enlightenment, that is, non-conceptual wisdom, and all meanings such as omniscience, because one mind cannot have multiple objects. This is his meaning. The second case is clear, that is, many minds also cannot accomplish enlightenment, which is connected to the previous one. For example, the minds that seem to accomplish the desired meaning arise simultaneously, and the desired meaning is enlightenment. In short, those many simultaneously arising minds that seem to accomplish enlightenment cannot accomplish enlightenment.

English

Why? Because it is impossible. That is to say, multiple thoughts do not arise in one moment. Even if experience is established, this is to eliminate some inverted views, that is, to say that this is the approximate establishment of thought. The scriptures say that each consciousness of sentient beings is its own cause. This is because it is impossible for many thoughts to arise simultaneously. Therefore, the heart of sentient beings is one thought, this is the conclusion. Therefore, the author of Pramāṇavārttika also said: The two thoughts are not simultaneous. This is what is said. The manifestation of the three examinations is also not gradual. That is to say, the previously mentioned minds that are successive, even if they are many, are not reasonable for enlightenment. This should be connected with what was said earlier. How is it? Like aiming for the enlightenment of the supreme Buddha, practicing the four mindfulnesses and so on, and realizing and understanding the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, and understanding its own nature in an illusory way. Why is it not reasonable for enlightenment? Because it says "that" and so on. Like the mind mentioned earlier, it is destroyed immediately after it arises by itself, this is without follow-up, because there is no cause, and its thing itself is also like this. Therefore, because there is no connection between them, that is, one is not connected with the other. Therefore, the cause is special, that is, through generating the mind that manifests the nature of the four mindfulnesses and so on. How can it be a deed with the characteristic of accomplishing enlightenment? "Unreasonable" refers to others.

English

The term "how" and so on is used to explain this reason. Here, there are two investigations: whether the flame and the essence each act in successive moments, or whether the essence is burned after they meet. To eliminate the first case, "how" and so on are mentioned. The flame is the flame of a lamp, and the essence is what is known. The moment these meet is the nature of aggregation, and the first ability to burn means that without a second moment of being able to burn, the flame is the burner, so it is the cause, and the essence is what is burned, so it is the result. These various situations are the nature of self. Whatever burns and is burned, the flame and the essence, if they are like the burner and the burned, it is not possible, and this is the remaining part. Why? The respective causes of the flame and the essence, that is, the nature of the immediate cause and the moment of mutual interaction, are simultaneous because of their continuous interaction with each other. The so-called "encounter that arises simultaneously" refers to what arises from the meeting of the flame and the essence, because it is not distinguished, and because it is common, the respective immediate causes and the cause of common action arise simultaneously, just like the horns of a cow that grow simultaneously. How can it be said that the causal relationship of the flame and the essence, the burner and the burned, exists in the state of burning and being burned? Similarly, because of the ability, that is, if the arising of the flame and the essence is the second moment, or not the first moment, then, as mentioned before, the causal relationship of the flame and the essence cannot be the essence of the burner and the burned, and this is the remaining part. Because it would lead to the fault of being constantly existent, etc., that is, if it is admitted that the second moment arises without the first moment, then it becomes causeless, because the causeless does not depend on others. Because it is causeless and without support, it will lead to constant existence or non-existence. Things sometimes arise.
