It is dependent. By the reasoning of "it is dependent," it would fall into the fault of being either permanent or non-existent. In that case, it would not arise even conventionally, because if it is admitted that the second moment arises without the first moment, then everything becomes the result, without any difference. Therefore, there is no arising even conventionally, and there are no causes and results, etc. to it. This should be connected in this way. Alternatively, if the second moment arises without depending on the first moment, then because it is permanent, the moment of the cause does not perish. Non-existence is also because it has no power, so the burning of firewood would not exist even conventionally. Therefore, flame and firewood are not causes, etc. This should be connected in this way. The burning of firewood in the conventional sense is only when the first moment and the second moment meet. The reason for this is stated, etc., because in that way, it is not permissible for each of the earlier and later moments to be separate. Therefore, it arises from this cause and this condition, and this condition is only this, it is its own nature, it is the nature of dependent arising, that is to say, the nature that arises from depending on cause and condition. By that, flame and firewood are placed in the state of burning and being burned. This is the remainder. Why is that? When the two meet and gather, and are able to generate the second moment of meeting, etc., if one does not rely on and examine as the cause that moment when both flame and firewood are able to meet, then the only pleasing thing, that is to say, by the power of the connection between cause and effect in the conventional sense. Because of that reason, the special power that is led and established by the first moment is the nature of being able to burn, and not other different kinds. In particular, the second moment, etc., which is able to generate the burning of firewood. If there is a second moment and a third moment, etc., then at that time, even if there is no cause, that is to say, even if the moment of the cause naturally perishes, the characteristics of cause and effect, that is to say, flame and firewood, in order, at what time simultaneously, like the high and low of a balance.

Just like that, arising and ceasing. Whatever arises and ceases are the objects of close attention. For example, the fruit of fire is smoke, because it follows the law of the fruit. If it exists without that, it would exceed the category of having a cause. With such reasoning, through the five modes of direct perception and non-perception, the cause and effect of the nature of entering and returning of the flame and essence are the objects of focus. Furthermore, in whatever direction it is truly the case that the entity of cause and effect is not permissible, there is nothing reliable upon that, and in that direction also, following and reversing should be intended to be joined accordingly. Otherwise, in that direction, it would become various causeless or uncertain causes, because of being uncertain. The author of the Commentary on Valid Cognition said, "If everything is without power, then seeds etc. for sprouts etc., if power is seen, then all that is conventional truth, if you think like that, how it is, it ends like that." As it is said, and also in the Ornament of the Middle Way, it says, "The nature of all things, is following the path of wisdom, dispelling the desires of others, therefore, the bad debater has nowhere to dwell." And so on, it is said like that. With "by" etc., the example shown by the example of enlightenment and the example of the lamp etc. is said. The two that have become earlier and later moments, whatever is the same object, the lamp belongs to burning. To combine this is to know that it is the cause, this is the instruction. To take this seriously is that it becomes the main thing, with the example of the lamp in a rational way. The things that accomplish enlightenment, the things that have limits, are the nature of the eight realizations, or the nature of mindfulness and so on. The consciousness that appears there is because the mind that distinguishes is made the cause by the eight realizations and so on. Relying on the former, this is merely the nature of the condition, the law of dependent origination, taking conventional truth as the cause. The meaning of appearance is that the objects taken by eye consciousness etc. are the objects that are determined to be the nature of the incompatible aspects. Therefore, solitude is particularly superior, realm.
