Furthermore, in conjunction with the previous statement, "unreasonable" refers to what? It refers to the simultaneous arising of consciousnesses that appear to accomplish the desired meaning. The desired meaning is enlightenment. It is unreasonable for many consciousnesses that appear to accomplish enlightenment to arise simultaneously; this is its definition. Why? Because it is impossible. Because it is impossible for multiple conceptualizations to arise at the same time. Even if experience establishes it, this is to eliminate certain inverted views, namely that this is only an approximate conceptualization. The scriptures say, "Each consciousness of sentient beings is a separate cause." This is because it is impossible for multiple conceptualizations to arise simultaneously. Therefore, the mind of sentient beings has only one conceptualization; this is its definition. Therefore, the author of the Pramāṇavārttika also said, "Two conceptualizations are not at the same time." Regarding the clarification of the three examinations, it is also not sequential; this is what is said. In conjunction with the previous statement, the previously mentioned consciousnesses that arise sequentially, even if they are numerous, are not reasonable for attaining enlightenment. For example, by accomplishing the enlightenment of the unsurpassed Buddha through mindfulness and so forth, and by knowing and realizing the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, and by knowing their own nature as illusory. Why is it unreasonable to attain enlightenment? Because, as previously stated, the nature of consciousnesses immediately perishes after arising, which is without following, is without cause, and its own nature is also like that. Therefore, because there is no mutual connection between them, that is, there is no connection between them. Therefore, the cause is even more excellent, that is, through generating consciousnesses that appear as the characteristics of mindfulness and so forth, how can it be the characteristic of accomplishing the meaning of enlightenment? "Unreasonable" refers to the benefit of others. Therefore, the aggregate consciousnesses that arise previously and subsequently are able to attain enlightenment.

If it can be established, then aggregation also does not exist. I think this is because it disintegrates as soon as it arises. "That is not correct" means that whichever of the three examinations, those are not good. This is what the proponents of sectarian positions say. The explanation of the verses such as "candle" is that "how" etc. have already been mentioned. Here, whether the flame and the wick are each sequential moments, or whether the wick burns after they meet, these are two examinations. In order to refute the first view, "how" etc. are mentioned. The flame is the flame of the candle. The wick is just a name. These moments of encounter refer to the characteristic of aggregation, the initial ability to burn refers to the absence of a second moment, that is, the absence of a second moment that can burn, the flame is the burner, so it is the cause, and the wick is the one being burned, so it is the result. This is a matter of course, this is the nature of self-nature. The burner and the one being burned, the flame and the wick, just as the burner and the one being burned, are not permissible, this is the remaining part. Why? Because the respective causes of the flame and the wick, that is, the moments of close proximity and mutual interaction, due to their continuous interaction with each other, simultaneously, that is, the arising of the encounter that arises simultaneously, the arising of the encounter of the flame and the wick, because no special distinction is made, because it is common, therefore, as the cause of their respective close proximity and mutual interaction, arising simultaneously, just like the horns of a cow growing simultaneously, how can it be said that the characteristics of cause and effect, the flame and the wick, are in the state of burner and the one being burned? This is what he means. Similarly, because there is ability, that is, the arising of the flame and the wick, is the second moment, or not the first moment, like before, the characteristics of cause and effect, the flame and the wick are in the state of burner and the one being burned.
