Furthermore, in order to uphold the vows of Bodhi, one should know how to abide in the perfection of discipline. Although the precepts of the Bodhisattva are extensively discussed in other Mahayana sutras, they are also briefly explained here. To show that not separating from the intention of all-knowingness is a loss of discipline, it is said, "If," and so on. If one practices the ten virtuous paths, such as abstaining from killing, for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, but dedicates the discipline to Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas, and generates desire in the mind, then, at that time, as before, because of having a loss of discipline, the discipline will have faults, and likewise, the discipline will be lost as if destroyed. Because the one who generates the mind of Bodhi invites the Buddha himself, and then turns away from him, deceiving sentient beings, he is also defeated by others, which is a fundamental downfall, extremely serious. Therefore, the Shravakas and others generate a mind of desire and are in accordance with it. In order to show how to enter the discipline that appears truly, it is said, "Discipline," and so on. As previously stated, one should protect and uphold the discipline that has been received, and as before, completely dedicate it to supreme Bodhi. When that discipline does not slander others, has no arrogance, and does not praise oneself with the pride of one's own discipline and asceticism, and completely abandons the grasping of "I," and likewise, abandons, completely abandons the grasping of sentient beings, then it is said that the Bodhisattva, as previously stated, abides in the perfection of discipline, therefore, one should enter in this way. To show that there are other faults as well, it is said, "If," and so on. If a Bodhisattva practices the path of the Victorious One, because the discipline as previously stated is the path, he distinguishes and establishes these as those who hold the discipline and these as those who break the discipline, and should abandon and should uphold, then, therefore, because various grasps enter, he is unable to protect all objects of focus, so as before, he is extremely degenerate, and so on.

Because of the broken precepts, there is no completely pure discipline. Therefore, one should not cling to things. To show that there is no downfall in practicing without clinging, it is said, "To whom," and so on. To whom, with the power of understanding the dharma nature like an illusion, there is no consciousness of self, so there is no consciousness of other sentient beings. Therefore, because there is no distinction between self and others, one is free from subsequent attachment and anger, and because one has the power to turn away from clinging to characteristics, one does not practice forbidden things, so how can there be discipline? Therefore, to whom, there is no arrogance of discipline and non-discipline, because holding precepts and asceticism as supreme is a fault. The arising and holding of unwholesome deeds and non-discipline are also not there. Because he turns away from unwholesome deeds and enters into wholesome deeds, it is said because it leads to discipline. To show that one who has discipline will enter into giving, it is said, "Sentient beings," and so on. Whoever, as just shown, becomes disciplined in the conventional, because there is no elaboration in the ultimate, so therefore there is no clinging, whoever has no view of all things that are lovely and unlovely. Also, therefore, giving up the excellent head and so on of the limbs, there is no timid mind. Giving up what is needed is giving up all possessions, and because one constantly does not expect the fruit of giving, there is no attachment. If one does not completely give up external things, how can one give up everything? Therefore, it is said, "All dharmas," and so on. Whoever, with the observation of inferiority as a guide, is false because it arises from the determined conventional cause and connection. In the ultimate, because it is free from self-nature, it is also known to be selfless. When there is no timid mind in giving up one's own flesh, then what need is there to talk about giving up external things? Here, being stingy with external things is unfounded and impossible. Why do selfless yogis engage in giving and so on? Therefore, it is said, "To me," and so on. If one regards oneself and things

Because of attachment arising from clinging to "I," and because there is no characteristic of complete giving, being blinded by the darkness of the object, how can there be the wisdom of abandonment? Therefore, those who are miserly will be born in the realm of the pretas. Even if there is one in a hundred chances of being born as a human, they will become poor and destitute. Again, therefore, one should engage in the giving as previously stated. Why should one focus solely on giving at first? Because it is said "at that time" etc. Whenever one sees impoverished sentient beings, the Bodhisattva, with perfect compassion, is filled with faith in the giving as previously stated, and with the measure of scriptures etc., together with the fruition, abandons everything and is always generous in giving. At that time, the four continents adorned with the seven precious things, because they are completely free from attachment, are like snot ashes. Having given with the three wheels pure, one will likewise rejoice and attain inner happiness. But obtaining the continents as previously stated is not like that. In order to make the giving as previously stated inexhaustible, one should specifically dedicate it to unsurpassed Bodhi. To explain this, it is said "Bodhi" etc. Having given in the order just explained, the wise Bodhisattva, with a pure mind, thinks: May this giving be given to all sentient beings in the three realms. Having given with such a thought, and completely dedicating it to supreme Bodhi for the benefit of beings, then the inexhaustible giving of Bodhi and sentient beings will not be exhausted. In order to realize the fruition without manifest clinging, it is said "After giving" etc. Whether it is the giver, the giving, or the receiver, whatever is unobtainable, one will not cling to things. Giving is also practiced with the mind of embracing others, and not in order to expect the ripening of fruition. Like this, together with the fruition, abandoning everything one possesses is the mark of the wise.
