In order to refute the manifest attachment of those who are attached to objects, (the Buddha) said, "For example, the sound of a lute arises," and so on. Among them, the wood that is relied upon refers to musical instruments such as wood that is wrapped with strings and placed on the top of the neck. The string refers to the difference of the string located on the surface. The sound does not arise from the belly of the lute, etc., which means that there is no producer. All of these gathered together are designated as sound, which shows that sound is designated, thus eliminating the nature of the aggregate as a real producer. It is said thus: Do many causes produce one or many results? Similarly, does one cause produce many or one result? Thus, four kinds of observations are made. Among them, if it is thought that many causes produce one result, then the eye sense, form, light, and attention produce one eye consciousness. If this is admitted, then although the causes are different, the results are not different, so different causes will not produce different results. Similarly, there is no non-identical cause, but non-identical results are produced, so non-identical causes are not the authors of non-identical results. Therefore, the sameness and non-sameness of causes, following and not following, are irrelevant, so the sameness and non-sameness of results will become causeless. If so, since there is nothing other than sameness and non-sameness, diversity will become either permanent or non-existent, because causelessness is without dependence. If it is the aggregate that produces the result, and the following and not following are themselves the sameness and non-sameness of the result, then are these sameness and non-sameness not fabricated by following sameness and non-sameness? Then, how can they become causeless? This is not meaningful, because the so-called aggregate is nothing other than the aggregate. However, the nature of the aggregate is expressed by the word aggregate, and these mutually contradictory natures, such as the eye, etc., have become different. If it is not the same
