It was said, "Is it of the nature of cessation?" That which arises from that is the past, meaning the state of existence having disappeared. Because that itself is the nature of cessation, it is called having the nature of cessation. Cessation is emptiness, and because this dharma possesses that emptiness, it is of the nature of cessation, meaning it possesses suchness itself. It was said, "Does it cease in the second instant?" Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which has the nature of cessation cease? Because its nature is such that the moment it arises, it is already encompassed by cessation, so what else would cease? With this thought, Subhuti replied, "Bhagavan, it is not so." It was said, "Does the future possess the dharma of cessation?" Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which has not arisen become of the nature of cessation? The reply was, "It is not so." Because cessation is the nature of things disappearing, that which has not arisen is not of the nature of cessation. It was said, "Does it have cessation in another instant?" Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which is not of the nature of cessation cease? The reply was, "It is not so." Because there is no first instant, it is separate from cessation in the second instant, therefore it will not cease in another instant. If that is the case, then will that which is arising now cease? It was said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Will the mind that does not arise and does not cease, cease?" For that which is arising now, because there is no other arising, it is of the nature of non-arising, and because there is no cessation at the time of existence, it is of the nature of non-cessation. The reply was, "It is not so," meaning it is separate from the nature of one and many. If that is the case, then will it cease into non-existence? It was said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Which dharma, whose very essence of its own nature is the dharma of cessation, will that cease?" Which dharma that has the name of non-entity, whose very essence of its own nature is cessation, that is, the nature of dharma that is separate from the essence of form and so on, will it cease?

"It is not so, O Blessed One" means that because the objects of the third time, which have just passed, have ceased, therefore, because it is not existence, the non-existence of things themselves will not cease. If it is said that things like illusions cease, the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Will the Dharma-nature of all Dharmas cease?". "It is not so, O Blessed One" means that if Dharma-nature is not examined, it is merely a delightful false nature, therefore it will not truly cease. However, all arising things whose nature has become illusory by nature, their cessation in conventionality is called profound cessation. The meaning of profound Suchness is, the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Will Suchness remain as it is?". Bodhisattva means the remainder. Because it possesses the realm of non-discriminating wisdom, the Blessed One replied, "Suchness will remain as it is". If the Bodhisattvas of the third time abide in the same way as Suchness, will they always be Suchness? The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? If Suchness abides as it is, will it not be impermanent?". Because the letter A arises from emptiness, impermanence is not steadfast, but do you think that it is Suchness that abides in permanence and steadfastness? It is said in the sutra, "Whatever is dependent arising, you consider it to be emptiness". Therefore, because the meaning of conventional things is the nature of a moment, it is answered, "It is not so, O Blessed One". If, because it is the essence of meaning, it is simply not profound, the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, what do you think? Is Suchness not profound?". "Blessed One, profound" means that even if the meaning of things such as form is understood, it is not possible to directly realize their non-difference, therefore Suchness is profound and difficult to understand. The meaning of the profundity of knowable objects is, Subhuti, what do you think?
