Meaning of Words. Meaning of Words. First Chapter: Explaining Omniscience. Now, explaining the meaning of words, etc., elucidating the meaning of the sutra, starting from "Thereafter," etc. "Thereafter" refers to the close arrangement of words. Because it is preeminent in the world with gods, etc., through offerings, etc., it is the Abiding One. Among those who abide without afflictions, beautiful and supreme, possessing wealth and being content in mind, that is Subhuti. Here, some are blessed by the Tathagatas with the nature of bodily activity, with hands, etc., for example, teaching the Ten Bhumi Sutra, etc. Some are blessed by speech, for example, the sutra that dispels Ajatashatru's regret, etc. Some are blessed by mind, for example, the sutra that teaches the practice of Samantabhadra, etc. Therefore, for those who particularly admire the noble Subhuti, through embracing and completely entrusting, etc., diligently engaging in the Great Vehicle in stages, either to not cut off one's lineage, or the skillful means of the Tathagatas, etc., are inconceivable, because in every way, they also show the impossible, in order to benefit the disciples who truly see the power. When explaining the Prajnaparamita, through the door of speech blessing, in order to turn the noble Subhuti, whose mind is distracted elsewhere, towards manifestation, the Bhagavan spoke, that is, called out. How so? Subhuti! Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, starting from the Prajnaparamita, you should be confident, thus he said. Because it is the time of teaching the Dharma, even if it exists, O Subhuti! Now, may you manifest all that is particularly excellent, as you truly know the Dharma, meaning, definitive words, and confidence, each individually. Bodhi, which means not being attached to all dharmas, is a mind-hero complete with self-benefit; the one who has this thought is a Bodhisattva. Do Shravakas also transform in this way?

Thus, it is said, "Great Bodhisattva," meaning those Bodhisattvas who possess the complete and vast benefit of others are the Great Bodhisattvas. However, even the distinguished individuals of non-Buddhists have great transformations, hence they are referred to as Bodhisattvas. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, Great Bodhisattvas, and others begin with the Prajnaparamita, and so on. In the beginning of countless eons, they will surely arise, and through faith and joy, their practice will increase. Bodhisattvas who accumulate the merit of virtue, sit in the lotus position in a clean place, with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as their objects of focus. First, with the root mind, they accurately focus on the gate of names, and the principle of Prajnaparamita is to reveal the principle of the selflessness of all phenomena. Subsequently, with the investigating mind, they examine it with the various distinctions of its words and sentences, such as chapters and so on. After that, in order to enumerate the differences in the eight stages of manifestation through counting, they count; in order to determine the nature of each manifestation through measurement, they measure; in order to be free from addition and slander through discrimination, they discriminate; in order to be established by the validity of direct perception and inference through determination, they determine. Thus, in four ways, the meaning of Prajnaparamita, either individually or collectively, is sequentially meaningless and meaningful. Therefore, in the letters, in such ways, it is observed with a discriminating mind. After that, how the characteristics of discrimination are grasped by the apprehending mind, and how the meaning of what is observed is incorporated into the mind of total retention by the root mind that focuses on names, and what meaning will be well combined, should be meditated upon with a hopeful mind full of desire. Thus, initially, the order of the arising of wisdom, which is the nature of hearing, thinking, and meditating, is for the sake of realizing all-knowing wisdom. It is to reach the other shore, to reach the excellent limit, hence it is called Paramita. Moreover, what is called wisdom is the nature of being able to distinguish all phenomena well, and Prajnaparamita is wisdom.
