The reason for not conforming is due to a distracted mind. The terms "not knowing, not understanding, not comprehending" refer to measuring through direct perception, inference, and scriptural authority in order. Therefore, not understanding, the others refer to the remainder. Abandoning means discarding one's own nature. Being slandered is due to denying power. Speaking without thinking means uttering unpleasant words. The term "destroying" means not generating roots of virtue. Burning means generating negative imprints. Small merit means having little of the three, such as generosity. The term "small roots of virtue" means having little of things like loving-kindness. Turning back means causing the desire to act to disappear. Causing separation means causing the abandonment of one's own nature. Causing to turn back means turning back from re-entering. The phrase "from all aspects" and so on, "all aspects" refers to the nature of the Buddha, Sangha, and so on. "All aspects" refers to the nature of the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha and so on. "All kinds" refers to the distinctions of the smallest of the small and so on. "Everywhere" refers to the aspects of superior discipline and so on. Placing near means generating. Completely arising means not being destroyed. The term "in the great hells" refers to the great hell of Avici, which is twenty thousand leagues below Jambudvipa, with a measure equal to that. Above it are the Extremely Hot Hell, the Hot Hell, the Great Shrieking Hell, the Shrieking Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Black Line Hell, and the Reviving Hell, these eight great hells. The term "fire destroying aeon" refers to the world of sentient beings from the hell realms up to the realm of Brahma, even if they are in conflict, there are no remnants. At that time, the container world is empty, seven suns appear, and gradually starting from the water mandala, it burns up to the first dhyana. The term "in other world realms" refers to other three-thousand great-thousand worlds. If there is doubt about what is the cause of experiencing much suffering, it is greeted with "why," those.

Such statements are easy to understand. The five deeds of immediate retribution are killing one's mother, killing one's father, killing an arhat, causing dissension in the sangha, and drawing blood from the body of the Tathagata with malicious intent. Having committed these five deeds, one will immediately be reborn in the great hell of Avici, and therefore they are called 'immediate retribution.' Because there is no similarity between the three—result, cause, and nature—therefore, in order, there is no similarity even in image, conformity, or mere resemblance. Does compassion arise for those who suffer? Why associate with them, and so on? This is introduced with such a question, and then it is said, 'Shariputra, such persons,' and so on. For others, too, because they reveal their own faults, they are like rotten leaves. Like grass that spoils grain, they spoil the seed of bodhichitta, and therefore they have a black nature. Like a black demon, they generate blackness because of their great hatred. 'They will be destroyed by improper means' means that because they are objects of compassion along with those who commit such sins, one should completely abandon association and sharing of places, and so on. This improper association first declines and is destroyed by association, and so on. Therefore, the meaning is that one should stay far away from those who slander the holy Dharma. What is meant by slandering the Dharma? Shariputra, those, and so on, are what is said. Since there is a measure, why is it not spoken? To address this doubt, it is introduced with the question, 'Why is that?' Then it is said, 'The measure of the body of such a person,' and so on. Because hearing the measure of the body in the great hell, one understands that the suffering is very great, one will practice antidotes with great fear, and so on, and conversely, one will be separated from it, and one will vomit hot blood from the mouth, and so on. Therefore, the measure is not shown. This is the general meaning. Even mere death is unbearable suffering, and being touched by disease, these three words are spoken with the distinction of small, medium, and large.
