The so-called "that which has passed away" and so on. The so-called "not obtained" means not included in the present time itself. The so-called "not abiding" is because it is devoid of inherent existence, so it is not appropriate to abide. The so-called "not a sign" is because the cause that acts together is not a sign, and the cause of close appropriation itself is not an object. If one clings to signs in this way, it is because of the way it is perceived as described before. The so-called "not thinking" is because one is overly attached to the negation of suchness, and therefore does not fully understand the suchness of things. Therefore, it is inverted, so it is completely inverted. If it is completely inverted because it is not taken as a sign, then trees and so on would also become like that. After raising this doubt, it is said, "Because it is separated from mindfulness." Because there is no mindfulness, even if one does not take emptiness and so on as signs for things like trees, one is still not thinking because one has not fully understood the suchness of things. Similarly, even if one does not think of anything like Devadatta because one is separated from mindfulness or understanding, one is still not thinking as before. Therefore, because it is inverted, it is not a complete inversion, which is the meaning of the words. If neither taking as a sign nor not taking as a sign is a complete inversion, then what should be done at that time? Therefore, it is said, "Because of that sign" and so on. Just as with closed eyes or the blind, etc., merely not thinking because the conditions are not complete will not abandon the inverted habits of things, etc. Just like someone waking up from a state of unconscious absorption, the yogi will again generate a collection of afflictions such as desire, which has its root in attachment to things. Even without abandoning inversion, one cannot abandon the attention generated by the very clear experience of forms, etc., previously apprehended, just as one cannot completely abandon heat without completely abandoning fire. In this way, the misapprehensions of forms, etc., are like thorns, etc.
