DTG085 0000.《The Light of Ornament of Realization, a Commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines》.g2.0f

English

This is the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddha, which is completely distinguished by wisdom. It is also said in other Sutras that by realizing these paths of the ten virtuous actions oneself, and by understanding this profound dependent origination, one can attain the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddha. Because one abides in that aspect, one enters. To speak of that itself is to show and explain, it is thought. Thus it is said: In order to realize the self-nature of self-arising, even if others instruct, it is not needed. The wisdom like a rhinoceros horn is manifested as the profound essence. Thus it is said. Because there is no indicative word of the fruit, by what will profound wisdom be accomplished? One will also teach the Dharma, but also not speak, how is that possible? One should not say so, because not discriminating, not examining, not speaking in words, speaking is distraction. Therefore, teaching the Dharma, speaking, also accomplishes distraction, and distraction also makes the continuum more confused, so it is thought. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, when they were Bodhisattvas in the past, made the aspiration: Like me, after attaining Buddhahood, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, even without speaking, may I be able to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. Like the Buddhas, the Pratyekabuddhas also made such aspirations. Therefore, those also, at the time of their own enlightenment, by the power of previous aspirations and so on, for any object, in any way, whoever wants to hear, in his consciousness, in that way, even without sound, that meaning will appear, so it is called teaching the Dharma without sound. It is also said in other Sutras that the Pratyekabuddhas teach the Dharma with their bodies, and similarly, to Indra, they also answer with verses in their minds, and so on. Thus it is said: Whatever object, whoever, wants to hear in whatever way, for that and that, even without sound, that meaning will appear in that way. Thus it is said. After showing the distinction in this way, otherwise, if the cause is not excellent, then the fruit cannot be excellent, therefore, the path of the excellent ones is only excellent.

That is to say, regarding the explanation of the true path of the Pratyekabuddha, there are "sons of gods, therefore," and so on. Because you, son of gods, have said reasons such as "even longer than long," you should also know these others, which are the remainder. In this way, I want to become even longer than extremely long, and so on. Wanting to obtain is wanting to realize directly. Wanting to abide is wanting to become undistracted. He said, "Not relying on this forbearance," which means that it is impossible for that person to rely on the path that has the object of forbearance of definitely realizing the Dharma. If it were not so, realization would be unreasonable. This also explains that the knowledge of the path itself is the object of all paths. From the perspective of the Pratyekabuddha path, showing the difference is saying this: What is the path that is superior to the Pratyekabuddhas? That is, abandoning the conceptualization of what is to be grasped, it is not only the knowledge of the path that has its nature, but also the nature of the path of the Shravakas, etc. Combine it in that way. The sentence "Therefore, this forbearance cannot be established as the basis of the path" should be compared with the three words such as "wanting to obtain the fruit of returning once," which is the summary. Saying "only abandoning the conceptualization of what is to be grasped" indicates that the conceptualization of what can be grasped has not been abandoned, and also, if there is nothing to be grasped, then there is nothing to grasp. When it is understood that it is unreasonable in this way, it is said, "Venerable Subhuti, what is it like to listen to the Dharma?" and so on. What kind of sound is conceptualization? With what kind of grasping conceptualization is one a listener who has become a vessel of the Dharma of the Pratyekabuddha vehicle? The meaning is, what kind of nature should be considered a Pratyekabuddha? In order to answer, he said, "Sons of gods, my listening to the Dharma is," and so on. The idea is this: If there is an object with its own characteristics, then those who hold it will distinguish.

If it is said that unobstructed wisdom arises from its own nature and is not without it, this is the nature of things. Because the discriminating consciousness that clings to forms and other phenomena from beginningless time arises from the awakening of the habitual tendencies of one's own continuum, propelled by their cessation. Therefore, there is no certainty that clinging to discrimination arises only when there is discrimination of what is clung to. Therefore, those things that are similar to the nature of illusion and the nature of snakes are the nature of inverted appearance. Because they are related to clinging to discrimination, they should be regarded as clinging to solitary realizers. If there is a doubt as to why the objects clung to by such discrimination are false even though they are clinging, then the answer is given with "like this" and so on. Those solitary realizers do not disappear or manifest in the states of non-absorption and absorption, respectively. "In the aspect of clinging to discrimination" and so on is the remainder. It is thought: Because the reality of discrimination does not appear, and because it is deceived by being misled. In this way, even though clinging to discrimination has not been abandoned, it is explained that solitary realizers are the essence of the path. "Like illusion and emanation" and so on, because it only expresses similarity in some aspects, it excludes the statement that sentient beings are the nature of illusion. Incidentally, the meaning of discrimination that arises is: The noble Subhuti also asked, "How is it?" and so on. Are these sentient beings like illusions? Is their inverted nature not illusion? Therefore, it is not well shown by asserting that sentient beings truly exist. To this, the sons of gods answered with "Sons of gods, these sentient beings are like illusions" and so on. It is thought: Illusion is not different from the lump of clay and so on, just as the form of an elephant and so on, because it cannot be distinguished from it. It is also not non-other, because eyes that are not deluded by mantras and so on can see the lump of clay.
