Therefore, it is reasonable to gather it accurately as it was heard. If done that way, some would argue, saying that one should say, "So-and-so taught me this," why say, "I heard it this way"? And they would also say other unreasonable things, such as the Blessed One should not teach, etc. This would be pointed out as very bad. If the venerable Ānanda, on the other hand, were to say, "Whatever is contained in the words 'Thus have I heard,' there are also sūtras spoken by the Blessed One himself, also spoken in the heavenly realms, and also transmitted through succession." Considering all of this, (the scripture): The sūtra of the turning of the wheel of Dharma, where did the Blessed One speak it? Great wise one, please tell us, son of the Sugata, please tell us! After such a loud proclamation, the venerable Ānanda, remembering the qualities of the Buddha, his mind filled with joy, his face with tears, with a voice full of changes, said, "Thus have I heard," isn't that so? So, why use the word "I," which indicates oneself, to say that it was heard directly? There is no fault in this. Because what is shown by the blessing of the Tathāgata is like a definite showing. By that power, even if it is heard from others, it is as if it were heard directly from the Blessed One himself. Or, even if it is heard from others, because he is the supreme holder of the Dharma, in order to ascertain the meaning, he had asked the Blessed One. Therefore, because of ascertaining the meaning, it is as if it were heard from the Blessed One, so it is said that "I" heard it. Whatever is to be expressed by the words "Thus have I heard" is all based on the scripture, so there is no fault. After raising the question in this way, now when, from where, in what place, and with whom did you hear such a precious collection of sūtras? In order to show oneself as a reliable person, the answer is that the place, time, teacher, and complete retinue are the causes for showing. Thus beginning to speak, once...
