Subhuti, what do you think? Is the path not without substance? Is the fruit of stream-enterer not without substance? Once-returner, non-returner, Arhat, solitary enlightenment, are they not without substance? Even omniscience, is it not without substance? He replied: Bhagavan, the path is without substance. The fruit of stream-enterer is without substance. Once-returner, non-returner, Arhat, solitary enlightenment are without substance. Even omniscience is without substance. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Does a dharma that is without substance think that it can attain a dharma that is without substance? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, in that case, whatever is without substance, and the dharma that is the path, those two are neither concordant nor discordant, without form, invisible, unimpeded, of one characteristic, that is, without characteristic. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, through skillful means, he causes sentient beings who are attached to the five aggregates with the four inversions, to transform impermanence into the perception of permanence, suffering into the perception of happiness, selflessness into the perception of self, impurity

becoming a perception of suffering. Those who are attached to things are liberated from things, which is a skillful means for abandoning perversion. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, why do children become attached to things, is there such a thing that exists without error, just like me? If not, how can there be attachment? And why don't they wander in the cycle of the five realms because of it? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, if there is anything that exists other than perversion, then the things that children are attached to, even as small as a part of the tip of a hair, do not exist. Subhuti, therefore, in order for this reason to be clear and complete, and for the wise to understand, I will give you an example. Subhuti, what do you think? In a dream, where does the dream exist, and is there such a thing as enjoying the five desirable qualities? Answer: World Honored One, even the dream itself does not exist, so where does the dream exist? Not to mention enjoying the five desirable qualities, it does not exist at all. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, what do you think? In the worldly or transcendental, defiled or undefiled, conditioned or unconditioned dharmas, is there anything that is not like a dream? Answer: World Honored One, in the worldly or transcendental, defiled or undefiled, conditioned or unconditioned dharmas, there is nothing that is not like a dream. The World Honored One said: Then does the cycle of the five realms exist like a dream? Answer: World Honored One, that does not exist. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a practice of the path in a dream that neither becomes defiled by afflictions nor attains purity? Answer: World Honored One, that does not exist. World Honored One, that is a non-existent thing, namely speech, words, sounds, and letters.

Everything cannot be established. The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a thing?" He replied: "Blessed One, it is not so." "Blessed One, if it is not so, then apart from deceiving children, there is no such thing. If even the image itself does not exist, then where would there be manifestation and creation, and having manifested and created, sentient beings go to hell, or go to the world of Yama, or are born as humans or gods? What need is there to mention anything else? There is nothing." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a path to be cultivated that, by cultivating it, one neither becomes completely defiled by afflictions, nor becomes completely purified? Is there such a path to cultivate?" He replied: "Blessed One, it is not so." "Blessed One, if even the image itself does not exist, then cultivating the path neither completely defiles one with afflictions nor completely purifies one. What need is there to mention such a path to cultivate? There is nothing." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what do you think?
