How is it that this will not completely abandon samsara? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, in this, a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom does not think of samsara as samsara, nor does he think of nirvana as nirvana. Because he does not think in this way, therefore, samsara and nirvana are equal, and thus become equal. Why is that? It is because he does not think of samsara as samsara, and therefore he does not become weary of samsara. Likewise, because he does not think of nirvana as nirvana, therefore one should also understand that he does not think of nirvana. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom abides in the realm of non-discrimination, as he has not abandoned samsara, so there is no taking, and as he has not abandoned nirvana, so there is no taking, is it not so? Blessed One, if there is no taking, how is it that there is no abandoning? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, he does not say, 'I take samsara,' nor does he say, 'I do not take samsara.' He does not say, 'I take nirvana,' nor does he say, 'I do not take nirvana.' Maitreya, Nevertheless, a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, having gained power over his mind through the wisdom that focuses on the realm of non-discrimination, being skilled in means, in order to show samsara in as many world realms in the ten directions as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, I say that he does not completely abandon samsara for the Bodhisattvas who have passed into nirvana. I say that he does not completely abandon nirvana because he abides in the realm where emptiness is not observed. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, how should one view the nature of the aggregation of non-discrimination? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, whatever is form, whatever is feeling, whatever is perception, whatever are formations, whatever is consciousness, and whatever is in between the qualities of the Buddhas, whatever is the emptiness of form, whatever is feeling, whatever is perception, whatever are formations, whatever is consciousness,

And knowing, what is the emptiness between the dharmas of the Buddhas, and what is the non-duality, the non-proliferation of those dharmas and the emptiness, the entity and non-entity, that is, Maitreya, should be regarded as the aggregation of the characteristics of non-discrimination. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, how can all the Shravakas definitively abide in ultimate nirvana? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, it is not so. Why is that? Maitreya, this world is a variety of realms, many realms, and in that variety of realms, many kinds and natures of sentient beings are clearly seen. Maitreya, there are those who from the very beginning seek the distinction of goodness, and also those who will obtain the distinction of goodness. There are also those who from the very beginning seek the distinction of inferiority, and are content with obtaining inferiority. There are also those who from the very beginning seek the distinction of inferiority, and are not content with obtaining inferiority, but seek a better distinction before that, and there is also such a distinction of kind that will obtain goodness. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, how can these three kinds of sentient beings, after attaining the state of Arhat, even if they seek the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, how can they obtain it since there is no rebirth? Is realization itself their rebirth? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, I do not say that their rebirth is caused by karma and afflictions. I say that their rebirth is inconceivable, an emanation, and a complete transformation. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, it is wonderful that Bodhisattvas, great beings, who from the very beginning seek the distinction of goodness and will obtain the distinction of goodness, have such great thoughts and superior intentions! World Honored One, what is the great thought of the Bodhisattva? What is the superior intention? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, are themselves Indra, and

Protecting the very essence (of the Wheel-Turning King), and all the Wheel-Turning Kings, and all the perfections of the world, are not pursued for their own sake, but without attachment or grasping to them, these roots of virtue are completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. This is the great intention of the Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas wish to share the happiness of non-attachment, the happiness of non-grasping, and the happiness of Nirvana with all sentient beings, and dedicate the roots of virtue to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. This is to be regarded as the great superior intention of not abandoning Samsara completely. Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the Dharmas of the Bodhisattvas are wonderful and amazing! The training of the Bodhisattvas is wonderful and amazing! Blessed One, a son or daughter of good family who wishes to learn the wonderful and amazing Dharmas of the Bodhisattvas should generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment." Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if all Dharmas have no substance, and these were not made by the Buddha, the Blessed One, nor by the Pratyekabuddhas, Arhats, Non-Returners, Once-Returners, or Stream-Enterers, nor by those who have entered these paths, and those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who practice this Bodhi have not made them either, then in these Dharmas, these are hell beings, these are the abodes of animals, these are the worlds of Yama, these are gods, these are humans. This action will cause sentient beings to be reborn in hell, the abodes of animals, and the worlds of Yama. This action will cause them to become humans. This action will cause them to become gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings. This action will cause them to become the Thirty-Three, the No-Conflict, the Joyful, the Delightful Transformation, the Others' Emanation Controlling, the Brahma Host, the Brahma Retinue, and the Great Brahma.
