Whatever feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness of suchness, and Maitreya, whatever Dharma of the Buddhas of suchness, those between them are neither substantially existent nor substantially non-existent, and should be viewed as thoroughly distinguished by ultimate truth. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, that which is called form is counted as non-dual. For example, that which is called feeling, that which is called perception, that which is called formations, that which is called consciousness, and that which is called the Dharma of the Buddhas, this is counted as non-dual. What did the Blessed One have in mind when he said, "That which is called form is counted as non-dual. For example, that which is called feeling, that which is called perception, that which is called formations, that which is called consciousness, and that which is called the Dharma of the Buddhas, this is counted as non-dual"? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, what do you think? Is that which is the non-existence of substance in the completely imputed form, form or not? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. Then, is that which is called form, merely a name, concept, designation, and term, form? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. Maitreya, by that reasoning, the completely imputed form is neither form nor non-form. That which is neither form nor non-form is non-dual. I had this in mind when I said, "That which is called form is counted as non-dual," it should be understood. Maitreya, what do you think? Is that which is the substantially existent part of the completely imputed form, which relies on what becomes the name, designation, and term called form, non-form? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. Maitreya, what do you think? Is that which is not the nature of the completely imputed form itself, and whose characteristic is not the characteristic of the completely imputed form, form? He replied: Blessed One, it is not.

No, Maitreya. Maitreya, in this way, that form which has been thoroughly examined is neither form nor non-form. Because it is neither form nor non-form, that is non-duality. Considering this, I say like this: the so-called "form" is counted as a number of non-duality. It should be understood that this is what the Buddha said. Maitreya, what do you think? Is that form of nature, the form thoroughly distinguished by selflessness, form? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not. Is that form of nature, that which is the nature of form, non-form? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not. Maitreya, in this way, that form of nature is neither form nor non-form. Because it is neither form nor non-form, that is non-duality. Considering this, I say like this: the so-called "form" is counted as a number of non-duality. Similarly, this should be applied to all between feeling, perception, volition, consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddha. Maitreya asked: Bhagavan, the Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, being skilled in the characteristic of non-duality of form in this way, and being skilled in the characteristic of non-duality for all between feeling, perception, volition, consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddha in this way, having abandoned the two extremes and entered the Middle Way, what is the characteristic of complete knowledge? What is the characteristic of abandonment? What is the characteristic of manifestation? How should the characteristic of meditation be viewed? The Bhagavan replied: Maitreya, the Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, having abandoned the two extremes, and thus having entered the Middle Way, therefore, whatever form is neither completely known nor completely unknown, that itself is its complete knowledge. All between feeling, perception, volition, consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddha is neither completely known nor completely unknown, that itself is its complete knowledge.

I, abandoning form is also not, that itself is its abandonment. Regarding feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas, abandoning is also not, not abandoning is also not, that itself is its abandonment. I, directly realizing the abandonment of form is also not, and not directly realizing is also not, that itself is its direct realization. I, for the sake of abandoning form, meditating on the path is also not, and not meditating is also not, that itself is its meditation. Regarding feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas, for the sake of abandoning, meditating on the path is also not, and not meditating is also not, that itself is its meditation. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, what is the complete understanding, abandonment, direct realization, and the stable and steadfast Nirvana of a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, the Nirvana of Bodhisattvas is profound! Extremely profound! Maitreya asked: World Honored One, why is the Nirvana of Bodhisattvas so profound and extremely profound? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, the Nirvana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is like this: it is neither Nirvana nor non-Nirvana. Therefore, it is called profound and extremely profound. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, how is it that the Nirvana of Bodhisattvas is neither Nirvana nor non-Nirvana? The World Honored One replied: Maitreya, because they do not abandon Samsara for the sake of others, therefore it is not Nirvana. Because they do not abandon non-Nirvana for their own sake, therefore it is not non-Nirvana. Maitreya asked: World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva, thinking for the sake of others, does not abandon Samsara, then since he does not abandon Samsara, how will he not completely abandon Nirvana? World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva starts for his own sake, not abandoning Nirvana
