There is form, but not in the ultimate sense. Maitreya, in worldly conventions and designations, there is (distinction) between feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddhas, but not in the ultimate sense. Maitreya asked: "World Honored One, as I understand the meaning spoken by the World Honored One, the realm of ultimate truth is inexpressible. World Honored One, if the realm of ultimate truth is inexpressible, then how can one suddenly apply names to the object of the characteristics of formations, such as what is called form? How can one suddenly apply names to the object of the characteristics of formations, such as what is called feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddhas? If it does not exist in the ultimate sense, then how can it also be the inexpressible realm? The object of the characteristics of formations should not be called the inexpressible realm." The World Honored One said: "Maitreya, therefore, I will answer you as you can bear to be asked. Maitreya, what do you think? When wisdom enters the inexpressible realm, do you discern the sudden application of names to the object of the characteristics of formations, such as what is called form, what is called feeling, what is called perception, what is called formations, what is called consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddhas?" Maitreya replied: "World Honored One, no." The Buddha said: "Maitreya, by this reasoning, one should understand that the object of the characteristics of formations is neither the inexpressible realm, nor is there another inexpressible realm other than the object of the characteristics of formations. Maitreya, if the sudden application of names to the object of the characteristics of formations, such as what is called form, what is called feeling, what is called perception, what is called formations, what is called consciousness, and the dharmas of the Buddhas, is the inexpressible realm, then all ordinary people

will also be completely liberated from sorrow and will also manifestly and completely awaken to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Maitreya, if the entity of the characteristics of formations is indeed other than the inexpressible realm, then, if that characteristic is also invisible, how will that inexpressible realm be realized? Maitreya, by this manner also, the characteristic of formations is not other than the inexpressible realm. Whatever is called form, whatever is called feeling, whatever is called perception, whatever is called formations, whatever is called consciousness, and even whatever is called the dharmas of the Buddhas, all these temporary designations should be understood as not being other than the inexpressible realm. Maitreya asked: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva, connected with the inexpressible realm, abides in the perfection of wisdom, then, regarding the entity of the characteristics of formations, whatever is called form, whatever is called feeling, whatever is called perception, whatever is called formations, whatever is called consciousness, and even whatever is called the dharmas of the Buddhas, if all these temporary designations are invisible, Blessed One, is it that existing things are invisible? Or is it that non-existing things are invisible? After asking this, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: Maitreya, the entity of the characteristics of formations is neither existent nor non-existent. Why is that? Maitreya, when you discriminate about the entity of the characteristics of formations, will the entity of the characteristics of formations be apprehended by those who have realized it? When, connected with the inexpressible realm, one abides in the perfection of wisdom and does not discriminate, will it be apprehended as non-discrimination? Blessed One, that is so. The Blessed One said: Maitreya, if that is so, then it is like this: regarding the entity of the characteristics of formations, whatever is called form, whatever is called feeling, whatever is called perception, whatever is called formations, whatever is called consciousness, and even whatever is called the dharmas of the Buddhas

Then, is whatever is hastily named merely conceptualization? It is merely conceptualization. Thus, abiding in the realm of non-conceptualization, when connected with conceptualizations, whatever is hastily named as form, or feeling, or perception, or formations, or consciousness, or the qualities of the Buddhas, whatever exists therein will become an object. Maitreya asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, for one who is skilled in distinguishing phenomena, after entering, how many kinds of investigations of the distinctions of form should be understood? How many kinds of investigations of the distinctions of feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, and even the qualities of the Buddhas, should be understood? The Blessed One replied: Maitreya, when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, for one who is skilled in distinguishing phenomena, after entering, three kinds of investigations of the distinctions of form should be understood. Three kinds of investigations of the distinctions of feeling, perception, formations, consciousness, and even the qualities of the Buddhas should also be understood. That is to say: These are the forms of complete imputation. These are the forms of imputation. These are the forms of the nature of reality. That is to say: These are the feelings of complete imputation. This is the feeling of imputation. This is the feeling of the nature of reality. That is to say: This is the perception of complete imputation. This is the perception of imputation. This is the perception of the nature of reality. That is to say: These are the formations of complete imputation. These are the formations of imputation. These are the formations of the nature of reality. That is to say: This is the consciousness of complete imputation. This is the consciousness of imputation. This is the consciousness of the nature of reality. That is to say: These are the qualities of the Buddhas of complete imputation, and so on.
