Falling is certain. Being bound by one life is certain. Asked: World Honored One, will a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is certain to attain enlightenment be born in the lower realms? The World Honored One replied: Subhuti, that is not so. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is certain to attain enlightenment will not be born in the lower realms. Subhuti, what do you think? Will a Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, Arhat, or Pratyekabuddha be born in the lower realms? Asked: World Honored One, that is not so. The World Honored One replied: Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, from the moment of generating the first thought, upholds giving, keeps the precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, engages in samadhi, cultivates wisdom, and abides for the sake of abandoning all non-virtuous dharmas, then there is no possibility of him being born in the lower realms. There is no possibility of being born in a long-life heaven. There is no possibility of being born in a place where virtuous dharmas are not practiced. There is no possibility of being born in a place where one becomes foolish and mute. There is no possibility of being born in a borderland barbarian region or a place that is untamed and without the fourfold assembly of followers. There is no possibility of being born into a family with wrong views. There is no possibility of being born in a place where the sound of the Buddha is not heard, the sound of the Dharma is not heard, and the sound of the Sangha is not heard. There is no possibility of falling into inappropriate attention. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, from the moment of generating the first thought, upholds entering into unsurpassed perfect enlightenment with a superior intention, there is no possibility of engaging in the path of the ten non-virtuous actions. Asked: World Honored One, if it is so, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is certain to attain enlightenment possesses such virtuous roots and will not be born in an unsuitable place, but why did the Thus Come One himself also show the story of being born in the animal realm? Where were those virtuous roots at that time? World Honored One

Tsalpa. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not born into the realm of animals due to unwholesome actions. Rather, they intentionally contemplate and embrace whatever body benefits sentient beings. Shariputra, it is through such skillful means that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is born into the realm of animals, and even if someone comes to kill them, they relinquish themselves with unsurpassed patience and do not harm those sentient beings. Do Arhats or Pratyekabuddhas possess such skillful means? Shariputra, therefore, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, for the sake of sentient beings, perfects great compassion for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Even when born into the realm of animals, one should understand that they are not defiled by the faults of the karma of the animal realm. Tsalpa. Blessed One, abiding in what wholesome Dharma does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva embrace such a body? The Blessed One said: Shariputra, there is no such thing as a wholesome Dharma that a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not perfect. Perfecting all wholesome Dharmas is unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the first thought of enlightenment until they enter into the essence of enlightenment, there is no wholesome Dharma that they do not perfect. There is no such thing as attaining perfect and complete enlightenment without perfecting any wholesome Dharma; that is not possible. Shariputra, therefore, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the first thought of enlightenment, they should train to perfect all wholesome Dharmas. Having trained in that, they will attain omniscience, and they will also completely abandon all afflictions that connect to habitual tendencies. Tsalpa. Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva

Lacking such qualities, would one be born in the lower realms or in the realm of animals? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, is the Tathagata a noble being free from defilements? He replied: Blessed One, it is so. The Sugata is so, for the Tathagata is a noble being and free from defilements. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, does the Tathagata manifest beings belonging to the realm of animals, and after manifesting them, perform the deeds of a Buddha? Is there such a thing? He replied: Blessed One, there is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, therefore, would the Tathagata become a being in the realm of animals? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, would the Tathagata experience the suffering of the realm of animals? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva, a great being, endowed with the noble Dharma free from defilements, also deliberately contemplates and takes on such a body. With those bodies, they fully ripen sentient beings according to their needs and circumstances. Subhuti, what do you think? When an Arhat manifests an emanation, does that emanation perform the deeds of an Arhat, and does that deed give rise to the roots of virtue in others? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, it is so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva, a great being, endowed with the noble Dharma free from defilements, also deliberately contemplates and takes on such a body. According to their needs and circumstances, they fully ripen sentient beings. Such a body does not turn into suffering, nor does one experience the feeling of suffering. Subhuti, what do you think? Does a magician conjure up the image of an elephant from magic, or the image of a horse, or the image of an ox? Or does he conjure up various other kinds of magic? Do those become the image of an elephant, or the image of a horse, or the image of an ox, or other kinds of living beings? He replied: Blessed One,
