abides. What is the reason for that? It is because, in this way, those who have direct knowledge are empty of the nature of those who have direct knowledge. Whatever is in equipoise is also empty of nature. The ways in which one is in equipoise, those ways are also empty of nature. Even if one attains the fruit of stream-entry, one does not abide in it. The fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, and even if one attains the state of an arhat, one does not abide in it. Even if one attains self-awakening, one does not abide in it. The questioner asks: Why does one not abide in it? The Blessed One replied: One does not abide for two reasons. What are the two? They are self-nature and non-self-nature. Because of these two, there is no abiding in those fruits, whether one abides in something, or by something, or where one will abide. One does not rejoice merely in that. What is the reason for that? Like this, one should not think, 'I have not attained the fruit of stream-entry,' but one should not abide in it. One should not think, 'I have not attained the fruit of once-returner and the fruit of non-returner, and the state of an arhat,' but one should not abide in it. One should not think, 'I have not attained up to the state of a self-awakened Buddha,' but one should not abide in it. One should fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What is the reason for that? Because I have held closely from the moment I first generated the mind, I do not generate any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What is the reason for that? Because I have held closely from the first ground, I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. I have held closely from the tenth ground, I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having entered without fault as a Bodhisattva, one thinks, 'I have not generated any other thought except for generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without a distracted mind, whether by body, speech, or mind,

Whether I practice or not, there is no practice without the mind of enlightenment. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the mind of enlightenment and practices the path of enlightenment without distraction. Asked, "Bhagavan, if all dharmas are unborn, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the path of enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. All dharmas are unborn. What is it like? For those who do not manifest aggregation, all dharmas are unborn." Asked, "Bhagavan, then whether the Tathagatas appear or the Tathagatas do not appear, isn't the dharma-nature of all dharmas abiding as such?" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Whether the Tathagatas appear or the Tathagatas do not appear, the dharma-nature of all dharmas abides as such. For those who do not understand the abiding of the dharma-nature, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the path of enlightenment for their benefit, and through that path completely liberates sentient beings from samsara. This is the activity of establishing the abandonment of attachment to the manifestation of all dharmas." Asked, "Bhagavan, is it through the path that has arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "No." Asked, "Bhagavan, then is it through the path that has not arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "No." Asked, "Bhagavan, then is it through the path that is both arisen and arisen, and both not arisen and not arisen, that one will attain enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "No." Asked, "Bhagavan, then is it through the path that is neither arisen nor not arisen that one will attain enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "No." Asked, "Bhagavan, then how will one attain enlightenment?" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, enlightenment is not attained through the path, nor is it attained through the non-path. Enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is"

Bodhi! He reported: O Blessed One, if that is so, then Bodhi itself is also the path! If the path itself is also Bodhi, then Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should have already attained Bodhi. Then, why are the thirty-two marks, eighty minor marks, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, of the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, great being, spoken of? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Buddha attain Bodhi? He reported: O Blessed One, that is not so. Buddhas do not attain Bodhi. Buddha itself is Bodhi. Bodhi itself is Buddha. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, you said: Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should have already attained Bodhi. Subhuti, in this regard, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas have perfected the Paramitas, perfected all emptiness, perfected the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, perfected the noble truths, dhyana, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, the successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, superknowledges, samadhi, and the doors of dharani. They have perfected the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and perfected the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, and with the Vajra-like Samadhi, with the wisdom of a single instant, they manifestly awaken to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. After manifestly awakening to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment and becoming a Buddha, they are called the all-seeing Tathagata, the master of all dharmas.
