I will not do what cannot manifest perfect and complete enlightenment. I will not be devoured by demons. I shall manifest perfect and complete unexcelled enlightenment. Having thus manifested perfect enlightenment, I shall also act according to the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings. By the deeds I accomplish, I shall completely liberate all sentient beings from their perversions. Shariputra, for example, a magician conjures up a magical man, who conjures up many billions, trillions, hundreds of thousands of living beings. Having conjured them, he satisfies them with extremely delicious and pleasant food and drink. Having thus satisfied them, he says, "I have increased much merit! I have increased much merit!" Shariputra, what do you think? Is there anyone who is having a feast, or being satisfied, or increasing merit? He replied, "No, Blessed One." The Blessed One said, "Shariputra, likewise, a Bodhisattva, a great being, from the moment of generating the first thought, engages in the perfections, engages in all emptiness, engages in the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, engages in the noble truths, engages in meditation, engages in the immeasurables, engages in the formless absorptions, engages in liberation, engages in the successive abidings, engages in the doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, engages in clairvoyance, engages in all samadhis, engages in all dharani doors, engages in the ten powers of the Tathagata, engages in the four fearlessnesses, engages in the four analytical knowledges, engages in great love, engages in great compassion, engages in the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, perfects the path to enlightenment, and when purifying the Buddha-field, ripens all sentient beings. He does not focus on any particular sentient being, nor does he expect any sentient being to be tamed. Not focusing on any sentient being in this way is the activity of establishing the ripening of sentient beings.
