When a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, although he practices the Perfection of Diligence, he does not focus on diligence and the author of diligence. If he does not focus on those two dharmas, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will attain the path to enlightenment. Subhuti! When a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, he will attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi through skillful means. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, although he practices the Perfection of Dhyana, he does not focus on dhyana and the one who practices dhyana. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, although he cultivates the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not focus on wisdom and the possessor of wisdom. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, although he practices the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddha, he does not focus on the unshared dharmas of the Buddha, nor does he focus on the one who cultivates the unshared dharmas of the Buddha. If he does not focus on those two dharmas, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will attain the path to enlightenment. Subhuti! When a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, he will attain the unsurpassed.

He will awaken to unsurpassable, perfectly complete enlightenment. Then, the venerable Śāriputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, strive on the path to enlightenment?" The Blessed One replied: "Śāriputra, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not combine or separate form with skillful means. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever form is combined or separated has no intrinsic nature. He does not combine or separate feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever consciousness is combined or separated has no intrinsic nature. He does not combine or separate the sense bases, elements, or dependent origination. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever dependent origination is combined or separated has no intrinsic nature. He does not combine or separate the perfections, all emptinesses, or the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment are combined or separated have no intrinsic nature. He does not combine or separate the noble truths, meditative stabilizations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, the successively abiding stabilizations, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, higher knowledges, samādhis, or the gateways of dhāraṇī. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever gateways of dhāraṇī are combined or separated have no intrinsic nature. He does not combine or separate the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great loving-kindness, great compassion, or the unmixed dharmas of the Buddha. Why is that? Because, in this way, whatever unmixed dharmas of the Buddha are combined or separated have no intrinsic nature." He asked: "Blessed One, with what dharma does one combine?

Or, if there is no inherent nature to be distinguished, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva realize the Perfection of Wisdom that should be studied? If one does not study the Perfection of Wisdom, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Shariputra, it is so, it is so. Just as you have said, if one does not study the Perfection of Wisdom, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment; this is through skillful means, not through unskillful means. Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, observes the inherent nature of any dharma, then he will not cling to it. But if he does not observe inherent nature, then what does he cling to in saying, "This is form," "This is feeling," "This is perception," "These are formations," "This is consciousness"? These are the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination. These are the perfections, all emptiness, and the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment. These are the noble truths, meditative concentration, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, gradual abiding absorptions, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, supernormal knowledges, samadhi, and the gateways of dharani. These are the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the unshared dharmas of the Buddha. What does he cling to even up to "These are all-knowingness"? Shariputra, the Perfection of Wisdom is ungraspable. The Perfection of Meditative Concentration, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Ethical Discipline, the Perfection of Generosity.
