What is it? The eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Internal dharmas are empty of internal dharmas. External dharmas are also known to be empty of external dharmas. Thus, one knows the ayatanas. How does one know the dhatus? The eye-dhatu is also empty of the nature of the eye-dhatu. The form-dhatu is also empty of the nature of the form-dhatu. The eye-consciousness-dhatu is also empty of the nature of the eye-consciousness-dhatu. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind-dhatu are also empty of the nature of the mind-dhatu. The dharma-dhatu is also empty of the nature of the dharma-dhatu. The mind-consciousness-dhatu is also known to be empty of the nature of the mind-consciousness-dhatu. Thus, one knows the dhatus. The earth-dhatu is empty of the nature of the earth-dhatu. Similarly, the water-dhatu, fire-dhatu, wind-dhatu, space-dhatu, and consciousness-dhatu are known to be empty of their own nature. How does one know dependent origination? Knowing that dependent origination is without arising, and similarly, knowing that dependent origination is without ceasing, without interruption, without permanence, not one, not different, without coming, without going, free from elaboration and peaceful, thus one knows dependent origination. How does one know the noble truths? One knows the noble truth of suffering, one knows the origin, one knows the cessation, one knows the path to the cessation, the noble truth. How does one know the noble truth of suffering? One knows suffering, one knows truth, one knows the noble truth, liberation from duality is the noble truth, non-duality is called the noble truth, thus one knows. Similarly, one knows the origin, cessation, and the path to the cessation, the noble truth, thus one knows.

One must know the truths of suffering. How does one know the suchness of suffering? One must know that the suchness of suffering is non-erroneous. Similarly, one must also thoroughly understand the suchness of origination, cessation, and the path. In this way, one knows the suchness of the noble truths. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, while practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, seeks those mutually different dharmas in that way, will he not disturb the element of Dharma?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, if there were a dharma that does not belong to the element of Dharma, then it would indeed be disturbing. Subhuti, I do not see any other dharma that does not belong to the element of Dharma. If one were to see it, then it would also disturb the element of Dharma. Why is that? Subhuti, neither the Tathagata, nor the Bodhisattva, nor the Pratyekabuddha, nor the Shravaka of the Tathagata sees any dharma that does not belong to the element of Dharma. Because one does not see it, there is no designation of 'another dharma that does not belong to the element of Dharma.' Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom should train in the element of Dharma." Subhuti asked, "Blessed One, what will a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva learn by studying the element of Dharma?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the element of Dharma will learn all dharmas. Why is that? Subhuti, all dharmas are the element of Dharma." He asked, "Blessed One, why are all dharmas the element of Dharma?" The Blessed One said, "Subhuti, whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the element of Dharma of all dharmas abides in suchness in an undifferentiated manner. Subhuti, the element of Dharma is like this: virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas, and the mundane.

conditioned and unconditioned, mundane and supramundane, defiled and undefiled dharmas, blameworthy and blameless dharmas, all conditioned and unconditioned dharmas. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, by studying the element of dharma, he will study all dharmas. The question: Bhagavan, if all dharmas are the element of dharma, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom study form? How does he study feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness? How does he study the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination? How does he study the Perfection of Giving? How does he study the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, and the Perfection of Wisdom? How does he study inner emptiness? How does he study the emptiness of non-entity's self-nature up to the emptiness of emptiness? How does he study the four mindfulnesses? How does he study the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path? How does he study the four noble truths, the four meditations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, the six superknowledges, all samadhis, and all dharani gates? How does he study the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, great joy, great equanimity, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha? How does he study the thirty-two marks of a great man and the complete accomplishment of the eighty minor marks?
