When a great hero practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with a mind free from characteristics, he perfects the Perfection of Morality. Subhuti asked: "World Honored One, how does one perfect the Perfection of Patience in those who are without characteristics, without objects, and without timidity?" The World Honored One replied: "Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, with a mind free from characteristics, from the initial arising of the mind until he sits at the Bodhi tree, all sentient beings repeatedly come before him, striking him with stones and clods, and stabbing him with weapons, yet that Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not give the slightest opportunity for a mind of anger to arise. That Bodhisattva Mahasattva should cultivate two kinds of patience. What are the two? They are: being able to endure all sentient beings who strike with abuse, clods, sticks, and so on; and generating patience in these unborn dharmas. When that Bodhisattva Mahasattva is struck with abuse, exposure of shortcomings, sticks, clods, and so on, he should examine separately in this way: Who is abusing me? Who is exposing my shortcomings? Who is striking me with sticks, clods, and weapons? He should examine separately in this way. He should separately examine the self-nature of all dharmas. If, when examining all dharmas separately, even the nature of dharma is not found, how can the self-nature of dharmas be seen? When he examines the self-nature of dharmas in this way, he thinks: Who is piercing or cutting me? When he examines the self-nature of dharmas in this way, he obtains profound patience in the unborn dharmas. Why is it called patience? Because afflictions do not arise and wisdom is not destroyed, patience is patience in the unborn dharmas. He abides in these two patiences and perfects the four dhyanas. The four immeasurables and form

The four formless absorptions, the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the three doors of liberation, the supernormal knowledges, the samadhi, the door of dharani, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddhas are all fully accomplished. He abides in these noble, undefiled, transcendent dharmas that are not common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and thus fully accomplishes the noble supernormal knowledges. Having fully accomplished these supernormal knowledges, he also correctly practices the six perfections. He abides in these supernormal knowledges, and with the divine eye, he sees all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who abide and sustain in the immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable realms of the eastern direction, and those who teach the Dharma. Having seen all those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, he obtains the recollection of the Buddha. That recollection of the Buddha will not cease until he manifests complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. Similarly, in each of the directions of the south, west, north, northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest, below, and above, he sees all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who abide in the immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable realms. Having seen all those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, he obtains the recollection of the Buddha. That recollection of the Buddha will not cease until he manifests complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. With the divine ear that transcends human abilities, he hears the teachings spoken by those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and having heard them, he also retains them. Having retained them, he also makes effort in the same way. Having made effort in the same way, he also teaches the Dharma to sentient beings in the same way. His mind's aspect...

I know perfectly the minds of those Buddhas, the Bhagavat. I also know perfectly the minds of all noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and of all sentient beings. He knows the minds of all sentient beings completely with his mind, and teaches the Dharma accordingly. He knows the past roots of virtue of those sentient beings by knowing the recollection of past lives, and also truly teaches the roots of virtue to those sentient beings. He truly exhorts, truly praises, and truly makes them rejoice. He knows the exhaustion of defilements. By knowing the exhaustion of defilements, he establishes sentient beings well in the three vehicles and will establish them well. That Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, matures all sentient beings with skillful means, makes the Buddha-field completely pure, perfects the knowledge of all aspects, and manifests complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. After manifesting complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he turns the wheel of Dharma. After turning the wheel of Dharma, he completely liberates sentient beings from samsara with the three vehicles. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he perfects the Perfection of Patience with a mind free from characteristics. Subhuti asked: "Bhagavan, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, perfect the Perfection of Diligence in the dharmas of no characteristic, no defilement, no effort, and no attachment?" The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, from the time of generating the first thought with a mind free from characteristics, he is united with bodily diligence and united with mental diligence. He abides in bodily diligence and cultivates the first dhyana.
