If, in the presence of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, all sentient beings repeatedly come and insult or speak unpleasant words, utter vulgar words that are unbearable, or strike or stab with stones, sticks, and weapons, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, wishing to perfect the Paramita of Patience, should not generate even a slight bit of anger or malice. Instead, towards those sentient beings, "Alas, these sentient beings are tormented by the disease of afflictions. I should not generate hatred towards them. This is because I myself have taken these aggregates that are like enemies." One should generate even greater compassion towards them. With a loving heart, with compassion in mind, understanding in that way, this is called the patience of practice. What is the patience of understanding the Dharma? Those sentient beings, in reality, have nothing to grasp at. Is there such a thing as insulting me, or speaking unpleasant words, or uttering vulgar words that are unbearable, or striking with stones and sticks, or stabbing with weapons? All conditioned phenomena are like illusions, like magic, false and unreal like a mirage. Self and sentient beings and life, the goer and the nourisher and the person and the individual and the powerful and the lord of power do not exist. All these discriminations arise from complete imputation. Is there such a thing as insulting me, or speaking unpleasant words, or uttering vulgar words that are unbearable, or striking with stones and sticks, or stabbing with weapons? I should hold on to the emptiness of self-nature and the emptiness of ultimate truth, and should not discriminate in that way. This is called the patience of understanding the Dharma. Understanding in that way, one perfects the Paramita of Patience. By perfecting the Paramita of Patience, one obtains the Acceptance of the Non-arising of Phenomena. Subhūti asked: "Bhagavan, what is meant by obtaining the Acceptance of the Non-arising of Phenomena? What is abandoned in it, and what is the wisdom in it?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhūti, that in which there is not even a particle of arising in any phenomenon, that is non-arising."

Oh! What is known by that is called forbearance. By that knowledge, one obtains forbearance of the non-arising of phenomena. The question is, Blessed One, what is the forbearance of non-arising phenomena of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and what is the forbearance of non-arising phenomena of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, what is the difference between these forbearances? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, whatever is the knowledge of the stream-enterer, and whatever is the abandonment, that is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Whatever is the knowledge of the once-returner, and whatever is the abandonment, that is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Whatever is the knowledge of the non-returner, and whatever is the abandonment, that is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Whatever is the knowledge of the Arhat, and whatever is the abandonment, that is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Whatever is the knowledge of the Pratyekabuddha, and whatever is the abandonment, that is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Subhuti, that is the difference between the forbearance of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and the forbearance of the Bodhisattva. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, possessing such forbearance, surpasses all those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, abides in the forbearance of the non-arising of phenomena arising from its maturation, practices the Bodhisattva path, and completely perfects the knowledge of the aspects of the path. Because of completely perfecting it, he is inseparable from the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and the samadhis of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. He is inseparable from the superknowledges. Because he is inseparable from the superknowledges, he ripens sentient beings and perfects the Buddha-field. After he has ripened sentient beings and purified the Buddha-field, he obtains the all-knowingness with the wisdom of a single instant. Subhuti, thus, when the Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, the sign

Accomplishes the perfection of the patience pāramitā that is without self. Furthermore, Subhūti, when a bodhisattva-mahāsattva engages in the prajñāpāramitā, they abide in the five aggregates of appropriation as being like a dream; like an echo, like a mirage, like an illusion, like an emanation; they abide in the five aggregates of appropriation and initiate the exertion of body and mind that is without characteristics. Subhūti asked: Blessed One, how does a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, abiding in the five aggregates of appropriation that are without characteristics, accomplish the perfection of the exertion pāramitā? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, in this case, a bodhisattva-mahāsattva initiates the exertion of body and mind. Through the exertion of body, they directly realize the superknowledges and go to all the world-systems in all directions and intermediate directions. They attend to and honor the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and they work for the benefit of sentient beings. They purify the Buddha-fields. Through that exertion of body, they ripen sentient beings and introduce them to the three vehicles, taming and establishing them well. Subhūti, in this way, when a bodhisattva-mahāsattva engages in the prajñāpāramitā, they accomplish the perfection of the exertion pāramitā that is without characteristics. That exertion of mind, being uncontaminated, becoming a limb of the path, and being included within the category of the path, in the exertion pāramitā, what is virtue? Like this: the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven limbs of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the three doors of liberation, the four dhyānas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine serial abidings in absorption, the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical understandings, great love, and great compassion.
