Those who have not attended upon the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-bhagavats, have not completely perfected the roots of virtue, and have not relied on virtuous friends, how much more so will they not attain omniscience? This is impossible. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to make the name of Bodhisattva true and who wishes to quickly attain the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment should attend upon the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-bhagavats, should generate many roots of virtue, and should rely on virtuous friends. Question: Bhagavan, for what reason does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva attend upon the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-bhagavats, generate roots of virtue, and rely on virtuous friends, yet not attain omniscience? The Bhagavan said: It is because they do not possess skillful means. Because they have not obtained those means from those Buddhas, the Bhagavad-bhagavats, they have not generated such roots of virtue, and they have not relied on such virtuous friends who show the means, therefore they will not obtain it in that way. To say this is to have wrong thoughts about the Sangha Jewel. Question: Bhagavan, with what skillful means does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva attain omniscience? What is that skillful means? The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the time of first generating the mind until closely taking up, closely practices the perfection of generosity. With the attention that possesses all-knowingness, if they give completely to the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-bhagavats, and to the solitary Buddhas, and to the hearers, and to humans and non-humans, they also do not have the perception of giving in giving, nor do they have the perception of receiving in the receiver, nor do they have the perception of giving in the giver, with the attention that possesses all-knowingness. Thus, they know that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, and that all dharmas are non-existent, unborn, and incomplete.

And, seeing them as unmanifested, even if entering into the nature of all dharmas, they enter with the nature of non-action, thinking that all dharmas have no power whatsoever. Therefore, possessing such skillful means, with the roots of virtue increasing, they engage in the perfection of generosity. They engage in the perfection of generosity, causing beings to mature, and causing Buddha-fields to be purified. Otherwise, other than engaging in the perfection of generosity for the sake of completely protecting all beings and completely maturing all beings, they do not desire such a result of generosity to be fully enjoyed in samsara. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva engages in the perfection of morality, from the moment of first generating the mind, they maintain morality with the attention that is endowed with all-knowingness. In this way, the mind of desire will not obscure them, hatred will not obscure them, and ignorance will not obscure them. Latent tendencies will not obscure them, and manifestations will not obscure them. Other non-virtuous dharmas, which become obstacles to enlightenment, such as miserliness, bad morality, an angry mind, a lazy mind, a mind of weak diligence, a distracted mind, a mind of perverse wisdom, pride, contempt, great pride, the pride of 'I', the mind of a Hearer, and the mind of a Solitary Buddha, will also not obscure them. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because they know that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and they see all dharmas as non-existent, unborn, incomplete, and unmanifested. Even if entering into the dharma-nature of dharmas, they enter with the nature of non-action, thinking that all dharmas have no power whatsoever.

Therefore, apart from practicing the perfection of discipline in order to completely protect all sentient beings and completely ripen all sentient beings, one does not desire any fruit of discipline that can be fully enjoyed in samsara. Shariputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the perfection of patience, from the moment of first generating the mind, he cultivates patience with the intention of possessing all-knowing wisdom. For this, the mind of attachment will not obscure, hatred will not obscure, ignorance will not obscure, latent tendencies will not obscure, manifestations will not obscure, and other non-virtuous dharmas that become obstacles to enlightenment, such as stinginess, bad discipline, angry mind, lazy mind, mind of weak diligence, distracted mind, mind of perverse wisdom, pride, contempt, great pride, pride of self, mind of a Hearer, mind of a Solitary Realizer, etc., will also not obscure. What is the reason for this? Shariputra, this is because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and he sees that all dharmas are non-existent, unborn, incomplete, and unmanifest. Even if he enters into the nature of dharmas, he enters with the nature of non-action, thinking that all dharmas have no power whatsoever. Because he possesses such skillful means, he practices the perfection of patience by increasing virtuous roots. He practices the perfection of patience and ripens sentient beings, and purifies the Buddha-fields. Otherwise, apart from practicing the perfection of patience in order to completely protect all sentient beings and completely ripen sentient beings, one does not desire any fruit of patience that can be fully enjoyed in samsara.
