Shall we not practice the characteristics of emptiness and signlessness, as well as the wishless samadhi and liberation, as well as the successive abidings of meditative absorption and clairvoyance, as well as the characteristics of samadhi and the gateways of dharani? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the ten powers and four fearlessnesses of the Tathagata, as well as the individual perfect knowledges, as well as great love and great compassion? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the noble truth of suffering? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the noble truths of origin, cessation, and the path? Shall we not practice the characteristics of dependent origination that accords with the law and that which does not accord with the law? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the conditioned realm? Shall we not practice the characteristics of the unconditioned realm? Blessed One, if we do not practice the characteristics of these dharmas, Blessed One, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having practiced the characteristics of all dharmas, transcend the level of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas? If one does not transcend the level of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, how can one enter the Bodhisattva's state without fault? If one does not enter the Bodhisattva's state without fault, how can one attain omniscience? If one does not attain omniscience, how can one turn the wheel of Dharma? If one does not turn the wheel of Dharma, how can one liberate sentient beings from samsara through the Hearer's Vehicle, or the Solitary Buddha's Vehicle, or the Great Vehicle? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if some dharmas had characteristics, then a Bodhisattva Mahasattva would also practice those characteristics. Since all dharmas are without characteristics and without form, unteachable, and without obstruction, thus, with signlessness as the single characteristic, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not practice characteristics, nor should one practice signlessness. Why is that? Because what was previously without characteristics will not later become with characteristics.

O, Rabjor, these dharmas have always been without characteristics. Since they are without characteristics, therefore, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should not train in characteristics, nor should they train in the absence of characteristics. Why is that? Whether the Tathagatas appear or not, this realm of absence of characteristics remains as it is. To think wrongly about characteristics is like that. Obeisance! Blessed One, if all dharmas have no characteristics, and there are no different characteristics, nor are there single characteristics, then how can Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cultivate the Prajnaparamita? Blessed One, if the Prajnaparamita is not cultivated, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cannot transcend the Hearer's stage or the Solitary Buddha's stage. If they do not transcend the Hearer's stage or the Solitary Buddha's stage, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cannot enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva. If they do not enter the faultless state of a Bodhisattva, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas cannot generate tolerance for the unborn dharmas. If tolerance for the unborn dharmas is not generated, then they cannot accomplish the higher knowledges. If the higher knowledges of a Bodhisattva are not accomplished, then they cannot purify the Buddha-fields and they cannot ripen sentient beings. If the Buddha-fields are not purified and sentient beings are not ripened, then they cannot attain omniscience. If they do not attain omniscience, then they cannot turn the wheel of Dharma. If the wheel of Dharma is not turned, then sentient beings cannot be established in the fruit of stream-entry. Nor can they be established in the fruit of once-returner, non-returner, and Arhat. Nor can they be established in solitary enlightenment. Nor can they be established in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Nor can sentient beings be established in the first merit of giving. From the discipline that arises

One cannot measure with objects of virtuous deeds and objects of virtuous deeds arising from meditation. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, all dharmas are without characteristics, and are neither different in characteristics, nor are they the same in characteristics. Asked: If all dharmas have no characteristics, how does one cultivate the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivates the Perfection of Wisdom, which is neither different in characteristics nor the same in characteristics. Subhuti, cultivating without characteristics is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva's cultivation of the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: How does cultivating without characteristics become cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Contemplating all dharmas as dissolving is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: Blessed One, how is contemplating all dharmas as dissolving cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Contemplating form as dissolving is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, contemplating these as dissolving is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom. Contemplating the eye as dissolving is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom. Contemplating the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind as dissolving is cultivating the Perfection of Wisdom.
