Oṃ! The Blessed One said: Subhūti, what do you think? Have you, abiding in the path, without grasping, been completely liberated from defilements? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Then, do you abide in what is not the path? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Then, do you abide in what is both the path and not the path? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Then, do you, abiding in what is neither the path nor not the path, without grasping, been completely liberated from defilements? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. Blessed One, my mind does not abide in anything, without grasping, therefore there is no liberation from defilements; Blessed One, my mind does not abide in anything, therefore it is liberated. The Blessed One said: Subhūti, likewise, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva should realize the true limit without abiding in anything. Subhūti, that which is called all-aspects-knowing, all-aspects-knowing, is called all-aspects-knowing by one aspect, that is, it is called all-aspects-knowing by the aspect of peace. Subhūti, also in this way, by whatever aspect, whatever sign, whatever characteristic the dharmas are to be expressed, the Tathāgata has understood those aspects, those signs, those characteristics, therefore it is called all-aspects-knowing. He replied: Blessed One, concerning that which is called all-knowing, knowledge of aspects of the path, and all-aspects-knowing, among these three all-knowing, by the aspect of abandoning afflictions, has this completely abandoned the remainder, or has this not completely abandoned the remainder, is there such a difference? The Blessed One said: Subhūti, there is no difference in abandoning afflictions, but the Tathāgata has abandoned all the connections of habitual tendencies. The Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have not abandoned all the connections of habitual tendencies. He replied: Blessed One, what is the reason? Have all those Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas abandoned afflictions without accumulating or attaining? The Blessed One

said: That is not so. He asked: Blessed One, what is it? Is there a specific distinction in the unconditioned? The Blessed One said: That is not so. He asked: Blessed One, if there is no such distinction, then why does the Blessed One say that this one has abandoned the bonds of habit, and this one has not abandoned the bonds of habit? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the bonds of habit are not afflictions, but the hearers and solitary Buddhas have the appearance of body and speech of desire, hatred, and delusion. Those bonds of habit, even if they are common to all ordinary people, will not cause harm. Because the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, does not possess or specify everything in every way and in every situation. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if there is no path and no nirvana, then why is it said that this is a stream-enterer, this is a once-returner, this is a non-returner, this is an Arhat, this is a solitary Buddha, this is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, this is a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Enlightened One? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the stream-enterer, the once-returner, the non-returner, the Arhat, the solitary Buddha, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, all of these are distinguished within the unconditioned. He asked: Blessed One, what is it? In the unconditioned, is there a thorough distinction between this being a stream-enterer, this being a once-returner, this being a non-returner, this being an Arhat, this being a solitary Buddha, this being a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, this being a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Enlightened One?

Although the unconditioned is not entirely distinguishable, yet it is measured and stated in words, but ultimately it cannot be completely distinguished. Why is that? Because there is no path of language to be established upon it. However, for those which have not determined the limits, the later limit is established. Subhuti, since all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, if even the prior limit is not perceived, how can the later limit be perceived? That is impossible, because there is no place. Subhuti, those sentient beings, because they do not understand that all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, therefore it is said to them, 'This is the prior limit,' and 'This is the later limit' is shown. For all dharmas that are empty of their own characteristics, neither the prior limit nor the later limit is perceived. Subhuti, in that way, all dharmas are empty of their own characteristics, therefore one should practice the Prajnaparamita. If one practices all dharmas that are empty of their own characteristics, then one will not become attached to any of the internal or external dharmas, conditioned or unconditioned, the dharmas of the Shravakas, the dharmas of the Pratyekabuddhas, or the dharmas of the Buddhas. After this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan, "Bhagavan, Prajnaparamita, Prajnaparamita, for what reason is it called Prajnaparamita?" The Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita is the attainment of the supreme perfection of all dharmas, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, through this Prajnaparamita, all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and all Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, will become perfect in all dharmas. Because it becomes Paramita, becomes Paramita, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita. Furthermore, Subhuti, this Prajnaparamita distinguishes the supreme nature of all dharmas, and because cyclic existence is not perceived in any of those dharmas, therefore it is called Prajnaparamita." What is said is complete bewilderment regarding the path.
