The Culmination of the Meditation Path. The Culmination of the Meditation Path. Subhuti inquired: "World Honored One, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should train in many places, but where should they not train?" The World Honored One replied: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should train in many places, but they should not train in any place. Why is that? It is because the dharmas in which Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should train are not found." Subhuti inquired: "World Honored One, since the Thus-Come One has extensively taught these dharmas in sutras, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, wishing to attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, should thoroughly understand the meaning of these six perfections in sutras. After thoroughly understanding them, they should become extremely proficient in words. After becoming extremely proficient in words, they should understand with their minds. They should also understand in such a way that the mind and mental phenomena do not transmigrate." The World Honored One replied: "Subhuti, it is so, it is so. If Bodhisattva Mahasattvas study extensively the meaning of these six perfections in sutras, they will know the meaning and extensive meaning of all dharmas." Subhuti inquired: "World Honored One, how can Bodhisattva Mahasattvas know the meaning and extensive meaning of all dharmas?" If one knows the suchness of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, one will know the meaning and extensive meaning of all dharmas. If one knows the suchness of the six sense bases, the eighteen realms, and the twelve links of dependent origination, one will know the meaning and extensive meaning of all dharmas. ! The Blessed One said: The absence of the realm of phenomena is the realm of phenomena. In this realm of phenomena, neither the initial cessation nor the complete cessation is observed. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who knows the realm of phenomena in this way will come to know the essence and extensive explanation of all phenomena. Asked: Blessed One, how does one come to know the essence and extensive explanation of all phenomena? The Blessed One said: In any case, one should know that all phenomena are neither possessed nor not possessed. Asked: Blessed One, what are those phenomena that are neither possessed nor not possessed? The Blessed One said: Form is neither possessed nor not possessed. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither possessed nor not possessed. The sense bases, elements, and dependent origination are neither possessed nor not possessed. All perfections, all emptinesses, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are neither possessed nor not possessed. The noble truths, meditative stabilizations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, successive abidings in meditative stabilization, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, superknowledges, samadhi, and the doors of dharani are neither possessed nor not possessed. The ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are neither possessed nor not possessed. Up to all-knowingness, it is neither possessed nor not possessed. The conditioned realm is neither possessed nor not possessed. The unconditioned realm is neither possessed nor not possessed. Why is that? Because whatever becomes possessed or not possessed, such a nature does not exist. Whatever has no nature is without entity. That which is without entity is neither possessed nor not possessed by that which is without entity; therefore, all phenomena should be known in this way. Subhuti, this is the essence for Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas.
