Whatever is dedicated, and the three concepts of where it is dedicated do not enter, thus dedicate it. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of meditation and completely upholds the perfection of morality. Request: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwell in the perfection of meditation and completely uphold the perfection of patience? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of meditation, and thoroughly understands form as a bubble, feeling as a blister, perception as a mirage, formation as a plantain tree, and consciousness as an illusion. Thus, he individually observes the five aggregates of grasping and abides in the understanding that they are without essence. When he thus individually observes, he thinks: Even if limbs and hands and feet are cut off, who is acting upon whom? Who is being cut? Whose action is it on the body? Whose feeling is the feeling? Whose perception is the perception? Whose formation is the formation? Whose consciousness is the consciousness? he thinks. When he thus individually observes, he thinks: What is the action and mockery that would give rise to malice? What action is there? What mockery is there? He does not dedicate those roots of virtue to the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but makes them common with all sentient beings and dedicates them to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. How does he dedicate, with what does he dedicate, and the three concepts of where he dedicates do not enter, thus he dedicates. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of meditation and completely upholds the perfection of patience. Chapter Fifty-Eight Request: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwell in the perfection of meditation and completely uphold the perfection of diligence? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva

The great Bodhisattva, abiding in the perfection of meditative concentration, is secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome and evil dharmas, with thought and examination, born of seclusion, possessing joy and pleasure, approaches and abides in the first dhyana. Then, with the cessation of thought and examination, with inner purity, the mind becomes unified, without thought, without examination, born of concentration, possessing joy and pleasure, approaches and abides in the second dhyana. Then, being detached from attachment to joy, possessing mindfulness and awareness, abiding in equanimity, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones say, possessing mindfulness, observing pleasure is equanimity, approaches and abides in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Then, having abandoned pleasure and also abandoned suffering, with the previous mental pleasure and displeasure also having ceased, being neither pleasure nor suffering, approaches and abides in the fourth dhyana, which is completely purified in equanimity and mindfulness. He does not cling to the characteristics of these dhyanas and the limbs of dhyana. Possessing a mind that is thus equipoised, he experiences various kinds of magical powers. He even causes this great earth to tremble greatly. He becomes one and becomes many. Having become many, he becomes one. He also experiences appearing and disappearing. He passes unhindered through walls, fences, and mountains, just as a bird does in the sky. He also walks in the sky, just as a winged bird does. He also emerges upwards and plunges downwards on the earth, just as one does in water. He also walks on water without sinking, just as one does on land. He emits smoke and burns, just like a great pile of fire. He also touches the sun and moon with his hand, those things that have such great magical power, such great strength and power, and controls with his body up to the world of Brahma. He hears the sounds of gods and humans, whether near or far, with a pure divine ear that transcends human abilities. He knows the minds of other beings and individuals.

And with the mind, he fully knows as it is. For a mind with desire, he fully knows as it is, that it is a mind with desire. For a mind without desire, he fully knows as it is, that it is a mind without desire. Even for the unsurpassed mind, he fully knows as it is, that it is an unsurpassed mind. That is, recalling many former abodes, from recalling one mind, even to recalling a hundred minds. Recalling one kalpa, even to recalling a hundred kalpas. Even recalling hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, 'I was in such and such a place, named so and so, with such and such a surname, of such and such a lineage, eating such and such food, dwelling there for such a long time, and my lifespan ended there.' Like this, 'From here, after death, I was reborn in such and such a place, and from there, after death, I was reborn here.' Thus, with aspects, reasons, and signs, he recalls his own and others' many former abodes. That is, with the pure and transcendent divine eye, from the death and birth of sentient beings, even to the place where sentient beings go, he fully knows as it is. He abides in these five superknowledges, and in order to attend to, inquire of, and request the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, to accumulate roots of virtue, to ripen sentient beings, and to purify the Buddha-fields, he goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. Those roots of virtue, he does not dedicate to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, but rather makes them common to all sentient beings and dedicates them to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. How does he dedicate, with whom does he dedicate, and to what does he dedicate? These three concepts do not exist; thus, he dedicates. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of meditation and upholds the perfection of diligence. Please, O Bhagavan.
