They do not abide in the realm of desire, determined by the perfection of morality. They do not abide in the realm of form. They do not abide in the formless realm. They do not abide in the ground of hearers or solitary Buddhas. Otherwise, those roots of virtue are made common with all sentient beings and are completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Just as they are dedicated, without engaging the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and where it is dedicated, so they are dedicated. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of diligence and completely upholds the perfection of morality. Asked: Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of diligence and completely uphold the perfection of patience?

Or, having become non-human, caused extreme disturbance to the mind, or all the limbs and parts having been cut off, severed, taken away, and discarded, yet the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of diligence would not think, 'What of mine has been cut off, severed, or taken away?' Otherwise, he would think, 'Those who have come here to perfect my body, having cut off, severed, taken away, and discarded the limbs and parts, what I should have obtained has been well obtained.' This is because he has well recollected the nature of all dharmas. Moreover, those roots of virtue will not be dedicated to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Otherwise, they are made common with all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. So, how is it dedicated? It is dedicated in such a way that the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and to where it is dedicated do not apply. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of diligence and completely upholds the perfection of patience. Asked: Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of diligence and completely uphold the perfection of meditative concentration? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, dwells having closely cultivated the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and is accompanied by joy and pleasure. When initial application and sustained application are nearly pacified, and with inner purity, the stream of mind becomes one, without initial application and without sustained application, he dwells having closely cultivated the second dhyana, which is born of samadhi and is accompanied by joy and pleasure. He, being free from attachment to joy, abides in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing pleasure with the body, which the noble ones describe as abiding in equanimity, mindful, and contemplating pleasure. He closely cultivates the third dhyana, which is without joy.

He abides thus. He has also abandoned the feeling of pleasure, and also abandoned the feeling of suffering, and since the previous pleasant and unpleasant feelings have also ceased, there is neither pleasure nor suffering, and he abides having approached the fourth dhyana of equanimity and complete purity of mindfulness. He abides having approached immeasurable love, thinking of the feeling of happiness for sentient beings in his mind. He abides having approached immeasurable compassion, thinking of the feeling of being separated from suffering for sentient beings in his mind. He abides having approached immeasurable joy, thinking of the feeling of joy for sentient beings in his mind. He abides having approached immeasurable equanimity, thinking of the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness for sentient beings in his mind. He abides having approached the sphere of infinite space, thinking of form as coarse and space as peaceful in his mind. He abides having approached the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking of space as coarse and consciousness as peaceful in his mind. He abides having approached the sphere of nothingness, thinking of consciousness as coarse and nothingness as peaceful in his mind. He abides having approached the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, thinking of nothingness as coarse and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception as peaceful in his mind. He does not fully accept the ripening of those dhyanas, immeasurables, and formless absorptions. Otherwise, in order to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, he is born into them, and those sentient beings are fully matured in the perfection of giving, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, the perfection of wisdom, and those six perfections. In order to generate roots of virtue, he attends to and honors the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. Those roots of virtue are also made common with all sentient beings and are supreme.
