This is how to fully uphold the Perfection of Discipline. The questioner said: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Discipline and fully uphold the Perfection of Concentration? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva enters the first dhyana, enters the second dhyana, enters the third dhyana, enters the fourth dhyana, and enters cessation, at that time, he does not focus on the Hearer's ground, nor does he focus on the Solitary Buddha's ground. Furthermore, he thinks to himself: I will abide in this Perfection of Concentration and liberate all sentient beings from samsara. He does not dedicate those roots of virtue to Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but shares them with all sentient beings and dedicates them to Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. How does he dedicate? With what does he dedicate? To what does he dedicate? He does not engage in the three concepts, and dedicates in this way. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the Perfection of Discipline and fully upholds the Perfection of Concentration. The questioner said: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Discipline and fully uphold the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the Perfection of Discipline, and does not see any phenomena as conditioned, nor does he see any phenomena as unconditioned. He does not see existing things as conditioned, nor does he see non-existing things as unconditioned. He does not see things with characteristics as conditioned, nor does he see things without characteristics as unconditioned. Furthermore, he does not see any phenomena as transcending Suchness. Apart from this, he does not truly perceive any phenomena as existing or non-existing. With the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, he does not fall into the Hearer's ground, nor does he fall into the Solitary Buddha's ground. He does not dedicate those roots of virtue to Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but to all sentient beings.

The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, from the time a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva generates the first thought of enlightenment and until he sits at the Bodhi tree, when giving alms, even if all sentient beings scold, beat, and even cut off limbs, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, thinks thus: I should give alms to these sentient beings, and I should not fail to give alms. To those sentient beings, give food to those who want food, water to those who want water, vehicles to those who want vehicles, clothes to those who want clothes, flowers to those who want flowers, garlands to those who want garlands, incense to those who want incense, ointment to those who want ointment, bedding to those who want bedding, shelter to those who want shelter, livelihood to those who want livelihood, and whatever utensils they want. And also make those roots of virtue common to all sentient beings and dedicate them to the all-knowingness. How to dedicate? Venerable one, the Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the moment of first generating the mind until dwelling on the seat of enlightenment, does not kill the life of any sentient being. Does not take what is not given. Does not engage in sexual misconduct. Does not speak false words. Does not speak divisive words. Does not speak harsh words. Does not speak idle chatter. Does not generate greed. Does not generate harmful thoughts. Does not hold wrong views. Their mind also does not enter the Hearer's ground, nor does it enter the Solitary Buddha's ground. That root of virtue is also made common with all sentient beings and dedicated to unexcelled, perfect enlightenment. How does one dedicate, with what does one dedicate, what is dedicated, and the three thoughts of dedicating to what are not generated, thus one dedicates. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of patience and upholds the perfection of discipline. Asked: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwell in the perfection of patience and uphold the perfection of diligence? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of patience and generates such diligence: I shall go to one yojana, or a hundred yojanas, or a thousand yojanas, or a hundred thousand yojanas, or a koti yojanas, or a koti nayuta hundred thousand yojanas, or a hundred worlds, or a koti nayuta hundred thousand worlds, and in those places, even a small number of sentient beings, I shall place in a place of refuge or a place of learning. Or place in the fruit of stream-enterer, or once-returner, or non-returner, or the state of Arhat, or Solitary Buddha enlightenment, or unexcelled, perfect enlightenment. Thus initiating diligence, those roots of virtue are also made common with all sentient beings and dedicated to unexcelled, perfect enlightenment.
