should not be abandoned. One should generate the diligence of body and mind, and those roots of virtue should not be dedicated to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but should be made common to all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. How, by whom, is it dedicated? How is it dedicated, what is dedicated, and where is it dedicated? The three concepts of not arising, thus it is dedicated. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of generosity and fully grasps the perfection of diligence. Question: Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of generosity and fully grasp the perfection of meditative concentration? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in this case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when giving alms, only enters with the mind focused on the knowledge of all aspects, and does not dedicate it to the ground of the Shravakas or the ground of the Pratyekabuddhas. How, by whom, is it dedicated? How is it dedicated, what is dedicated, and where is it dedicated? The three concepts of not arising, thus it is dedicated. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of generosity and fully grasps the perfection of meditative concentration. Question: Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva give alms with skillful means and fully grasp the perfection of wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in this case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when giving and bestowing alms, constantly abides with the wisdom of illusion in generosity, and does not see whether this generosity is beneficial or not to any sentient being. Those roots of virtue are also not dedicated to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but are made common to all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. How, by whom, is it dedicated? How is it dedicated, what is dedicated, and where is it dedicated?

Thus, without adhering to the three concepts, one dedicates it entirely. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, with skillful means, dwells in the Perfection of Giving and completely upholds the Perfection of Wisdom. Then, the Venerable Subhuti asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Ethical Discipline and completely uphold the Perfection of Giving? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the Perfection of Ethical Discipline, does not, through any discipline of body, speech, or mind, cling to the level of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha. Abiding in the Perfection of Ethical Discipline, they do not kill living beings, do not take what is not given, do not engage in sexual misconduct, do not speak falsely, do not speak harshly, do not engage in idle chatter, do not harbor covetousness, do not harbor malice, and do not hold wrong views. Thus, abiding in the Perfection of Ethical Discipline, they give food to those who desire food, drink to those who desire drink, vehicles to those who desire vehicles, clothes to those who desire clothes, flowers to those who desire flowers, garlands to those who desire garlands, incense to those who desire incense, ointments to those who desire ointments, bedding to those who desire bedding, shelter to those who desire shelter, livelihood to those who desire livelihood, and completely give utensils to those who desire utensils. From giving utensils to whatever human needs, they completely give whatever human needs those who desire them may have. When giving in this way, they do not dedicate this giving to the level of Hearers or Solitary Buddhas, but share it with all sentient beings and dedicate it to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Furthermore, without adhering to the three concepts of how one dedicates, what one dedicates, and to where one dedicates, one dedicates it entirely. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the Perfection of Ethical Discipline and completely upholds the Perfection of Giving. Asked, Blessed

Mahakashyapa asked: "Lord, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in the perfection of morality and fully uphold the perfection of patience?" The Lord replied: "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the perfection of morality, all beings, even gods, come to cut off and sever his limbs, and yet the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not become angry and does not generate a single thought of hatred. Moreover, he thinks to himself: 'That all beings cut off and sever my limbs is something I should gladly accept. By abandoning this decaying body of mine, I shall obtain the Tathagata's Dharma body made of divine diamond.' He does not dedicate these roots of virtue to the Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas, but shares them with all beings and dedicates them to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. When he dedicates in this way, he does not engage in the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and to whom it is dedicated. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the perfection of morality and fully upholds the perfection of patience." Mahakashyapa asked: "Lord, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in the perfection of morality and fully uphold the perfection of diligence?" The Lord replied: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the perfection of morality and does not diminish the diligence of body and mind, thinking, 'I shall liberate beings from samsara and place them in the realm of immortality.' He also dedicates these roots of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. When he dedicates in this way, he does not engage in the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and to whom it is dedicated.
