They enter into and arise from meditative stabilizations in accordance with the proper order and in reverse order. What are the nine? Subhuti, here, a bodhisattva mahasattva, having secluded himself from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thinking and examining, born of seclusion, full of joy and bliss, abides, having attained the first dhyana. Then, with the subsiding of thinking and examining, with inner purity, with unification of mind, without thinking, without examining, born of concentration, full of joy and bliss, he abides, having attained the second dhyana. Then, free from attachment to joy, abiding in equanimity, mindful and fully aware, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones describe this as abiding in equanimity, mindful, examining pleasure. He abides, having attained the third dhyana, which is without joy. Then, having abandoned pleasure and having abandoned suffering, with the previous disappearance of joy and displeasure, without pleasure and without suffering, with purity of equanimity and mindfulness, he abides, having attained the fourth dhyana. Then, completely transcending all perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking 'space is infinite,' he abides, having attained the sphere of infinite space. Then, completely transcending the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' he abides, having attained the sphere of infinite consciousness. Then, completely transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' he abides, having attained the sphere of nothingness. Then, completely transcending the sphere of nothingness, he abides, having attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Then, completely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he abides, having attained the cessation of perception and feeling. Thus, they enter into and arise from these nine successive meditative stabilizations in accordance with the proper order and in reverse order.

And be able to rise up. Those eight liberations and the nine successive meditative stabilizations are distinguished, and one enters into the Lion's Leaping Samadhi. Having dwelt in that samadhi, one discerns the twelve links of dependent origination in accordance with and in opposition to the proper order. What are the twelve links? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva discerns that actions arise from the condition of ignorance. Similarly, consciousness arises from the condition of actions; name and form arise from the condition of consciousness; the six sense sources arise from the condition of name and form; contact arises from the condition of the six sense sources; feeling arises from the condition of contact; craving arises from the condition of feeling; grasping arises from the condition of craving; becoming arises from the condition of grasping; birth arises from the condition of becoming; old age and death arise from the condition of birth; and sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation arise from the condition of old age and death. Thus, one discerns that this entire great mass of suffering arises in the world. If there is no old age and death, then sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation will not arise. Similarly, if there is no birth, then old age and death will not arise. If there is no becoming, then birth will not arise. If there is no grasping, then becoming will not arise. If there is no craving, then grasping will not arise. If there is no feeling, then becoming will not arise. If there is no contact, then feeling will not arise. If there are no six sense sources, then contact will not arise. If there is no name and form, then the six sense sources will not arise. If there is no consciousness, then name and form will not arise. If there are no actions, then consciousness will not arise. If there is no ignorance, then actions will not arise. Thus, one discerns that this entire great mass of suffering ceases. Thus, the twelve links of dependent origination in accordance with the proper order.

And also separately discern what is not in accordance with the Dharma and the rules, and also dedicate the roots of virtue together with all sentient beings to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. So, how is it dedicated? It is dedicated in such a way that the three thoughts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and where it is dedicated are not adhered to. Subhuti, thus a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the Prajnaparamita, is holding the Dhyana Paramita, which has been spoken of in the Path of Seeing. Subhuti, what is the Lion's Swift Samadhi of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, being secluded from desires, secluded from evil and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, possessing joy and happiness born of seclusion, closely cultivates and abides in the first dhyana. Having arisen from the first dhyana, he enters the second dhyana. Having arisen from the second dhyana, he enters the third dhyana. Having arisen from the third dhyana, he enters the fourth dhyana.
