Abiding with the perception of having no essence. Thus, understanding separately, one thinks: Even if limbs and hands and feet are cut off, for whom is it used? For whom is it cut? Whose action is it for the body? Whose feeling is the feeling? Whose consciousness is the consciousness? Whose action is the action? Whose consciousness is the consciousness? Thus one thinks. When one examines separately in this way, one thinks: For whom to enjoy and joke would give rise to harmful thoughts, what kind of enjoyment is there? What kind of joking is there? Thus one thinks. Those roots of virtue are not dedicated to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but are made common to all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. How and by what is it dedicated, and what is dedicated, and where the three perceptions of dedication do not arise, thus it is dedicated. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of meditation and upholds the perfection of patience. Chapter Fifty-Eight. Request: Blessed One, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of meditation and uphold the perfection of diligence? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of meditation, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, possessing joy and happiness born of seclusion, and dwells in the first dhyana. When thought and examination cease, there is inner purity, the continuum of mind becomes one, without thought and without examination, possessing joy and happiness born of concentration, and dwells in the second dhyana. Having abandoned attachment from joy, abiding in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing happiness with the body, the noble ones say, 'Abiding in happiness with mindfulness, examining equanimity,' and dwells in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Having abandoned happiness and abandoned suffering,

Since pleasure and displeasure have already vanished, and there is neither pleasure nor pain, he dwells in the fourth dhyana, which is characterized by equanimity and purity of mindfulness. He does not cling to the characteristics of the dhyana and its factors. With a mind thus composed, he experiences various supernormal powers. He can make this great earth tremble. He can become one and become many. He can become many and become one. He can also experience appearing and disappearing. He can pass through walls, fences, and mountains without obstruction, just as a bird flies in the sky. He can also walk on the sky, just like a winged bird. He can also emerge upwards and dive downwards on the earth, just as in water. He can also walk on water without sinking, just as on land. He can rise like smoke and burn like fire, just like a great pile of fire. He can also touch the sun and moon, which are so powerful, so mighty, and so authoritative, with his hand, and control with his body up to the Brahma world. With a pure, superhuman divine ear, he hears the sounds of gods and humans, whether near or far. He knows the minds of other beings and individuals as they really are. He knows a mind with lust as a mind with lust, as it really is. He knows a mind without superior as a mind without superior, as it really is. He can recall various past lives, from recalling one thought to recalling a hundred thoughts. From recalling one kalpa to recalling a hundred kalpas. He can even recall countless hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas. I lived there, my name was this, my family was this, my race was this, I ate such food, I lived there for so long, and the end of my life was this much. Like this, having died from here, I was reborn there.

From the point of being born in a certain place, up to the point of dying and being reborn here, with forms, reasons, and signs, he remembers various abodes of himself and others. This is because, with the pure and transcendent divine eye, he truly knows the death and rebirth of sentient beings, and how sentient beings proceed, he truly knows. He abides in these five superknowledges, and in order to serve, question, and request the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, accumulate roots of virtue, ripen sentient beings, and purify the Buddha-fields, he goes from Buddha-field to Buddha-field. These roots of virtue are not dedicated to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground, but are made common with all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. How does he dedicate, with what does he dedicate, and where does he dedicate, he does not engage in these three concepts, thus he dedicates. Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of meditation and fully grasps the perfection of diligence. Question: Bhagavan, how does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of meditation and fully grasp the perfection of wisdom? The Bhagavan replied: Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of wisdom, therefore he does not perceive form, nor does he perceive feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness. He does not perceive the eye, nor does he perceive the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind. He does not perceive form, nor does he perceive sound, smell, taste, touch, or phenomena. He does not perceive eye-consciousness, up to mind-consciousness. He does not perceive eye-contact, up to mind-contact. He does not perceive the feeling born from eye-contact, up to mind-contact.
