Even if someone were to cut off his hands and feet, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of patience would think, 'I should completely give to these beings; I should not fail to give completely.' To those beings who desire food, he gives food; to those who desire drink, he gives drink; to those who desire vehicles, he gives vehicles; to those who desire clothing, he gives clothing; to those who desire flowers, he gives flowers; to those who desire garlands, he gives garlands; to those who desire incense, he gives incense; to those who desire ointment, he gives ointment; to those who desire bedding, he gives bedding; to those who desire dwellings, he gives dwellings; to those who desire livelihood, he gives livelihood; and even to those who desire any kind of equipment, he gives completely. Moreover, he shares those roots of virtue with all beings and dedicates them to omniscience. He dedicates them in such a way that the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and where it is dedicated do not arise. Thus, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of patience completely upholds the perfection of giving. Subhuti: O Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of patience completely uphold the perfection of ethics? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, from the moment of first generating the mind until he sits at the essence of enlightenment, does not kill any living being, does not take what is not given, does not engage in sexual misconduct, does not speak falsely, does not speak divisively, does not speak harshly, does not speak idle chatter, does not harbor covetousness, does not harbor malice, and does not hold wrong views. Moreover, his mind does not enter into the level of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, and he shares those roots of virtue with all beings and dedicates them to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. He dedicates them in such a way that the three concepts of who dedicates, what is dedicated, and where it is dedicated do not arise.

Thus, dedicate it completely. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, is one who upholds the perfection of morality. Asked: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, uphold the perfection of diligence? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in this case, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, generates such diligence: I shall go to one yojana, or a hundred yojanas, or a thousand yojanas, or a hundred thousand yojanas, or a koti yojana, or between a koti nayuta hundred thousand yojanas, or a hundred worlds, or between a koti nayuta hundred thousand worlds, and in those places, even a small number of sentient beings can be led to take refuge or be established in the training. Or the fruit of a stream-enterer, or the fruit of a once-returner, or the fruit of a non-returner, or Arhatship itself, or solitary enlightenment, or be established in unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Thus initiating diligence, those roots of virtue are also made common with all sentient beings, and completely dedicated to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, such that in this, which of the three minds dedicates? What is dedicated? Where is it dedicated? Such thoughts do not arise, and thus it is dedicated. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, is one who upholds the perfection of diligence. Asked: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, uphold the perfection of meditative concentration? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, in this case, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, thus secluded from desire, secluded from sinful unwholesome dharmas, with investigation and analysis, joy and bliss born of seclusion.

The possessor dwells having closely cultivated the first dhyana, dwells having closely cultivated the second dhyana, dwells having closely cultivated the third dhyana, dwells having closely cultivated the fourth dhyana, dwells having closely cultivated up to the attainment of cessation. Whatever mind and mental factors, endowed with roots of virtue, are born, all of that is dedicated to omniscience. And in any case, at that time, the dhyana and the limbs of dhyana are not apprehended, and in that way it is dedicated. Subhuti, in that way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of patience and upholds the perfection of dhyana. He asked: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the perfection of patience and uphold the perfection of wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the perfection of patience, and when he observes the dharmas in accordance with emptiness, or in accordance with peace, or in accordance with imperishability, he does not manifest that nature of dharma until he abides in the essence of enlightenment. Having abided in the essence of enlightenment, he also attains omniscience. Having risen from that, he also turns the wheel of dharma. Those roots of virtue are also shared with all sentient beings and dedicated to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. How does he dedicate it with any of the three kinds of perception?
