A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is endowed with [these qualities] should be known as irreversible, which is to know in accordance with the arising. Furthermore, Subhuti, those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics by which an irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is to be known as irreversible, listen very well and keep them in mind, and I will explain. "So it shall be, O Blessed One," replied the venerable Subhuti, listening attentively to the Blessed One. The Blessed One then said to him: Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva engages in the Perfection of Wisdom, he is inseparable from the thought of enlightenment; he does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the aggregates. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the limbs of dependent origination. Why is that? Because, in this way, he abides in emptiness and does not see any dharma as inferior or superior, which is the forbearance of knowledge of the Dharma in cessation. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the talk of thieves. Why is that? Because, in this way, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, with respect to dharmas that are empty of inherent nature, does not see any dharma as stolen or not stolen, which is the knowledge of the Dharma in cessation. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the talk of armies. Why is that? Because, in this way, he abides in emptiness of inherent nature and does not see any dharma as little or much, which is the forbearance of subsequent knowledge in cessation. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the talk of battles. Why is that? Because, in this way, he abides in the nature of dharma and does not see any dharma as attached to or angry with. He does not dwell in conjunction with or in accordance with the talk of cities. Why is that? Because, in this way, all dharmas abide in emptiness, and he does not see any dharma as assembled or not assembled.

He does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of cities. Why does he not dwell? Because, as such, he abides in the emptiness of the sky, and does not truly see the collection or non-collection of any dharma. He does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of towns. Why does he not dwell? Because, as such, he abides in the true limit, and does not truly see the increase or decrease of any dharma. He does not strive in the speech and subsequent speech of those. Likewise, he does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of sentient beings, life, going, nurturing, men, persons, powerful ones, lords of power, doers, feelers, knowers, and seers. Why does he not dwell? Because all dharmas are extremely pure. Otherwise, abiding in the speech and subsequent speech of the Perfection of Wisdom, he is inseparable from the attention of possessing all aspects of knowledge. This is called subsequent knowledge of cessation. He practices the Perfection of Giving and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of stinginess. He practices the Perfection of Ethics and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of bad ethics. He practices the Perfection of Patience and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of strife. He practices the Perfection of Diligence and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of laziness. He practices the Perfection of Meditation and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of distraction. He practices the Perfection of Wisdom and does not dwell in the speech and subsequent speech of corrupt wisdom. He practices all dharmas in emptiness, and he is one who desires dharma, not one who does not desire dharma. He practices the realm of dharma, and he is one who speaks well of the non-difference of dharmas, and he is one who desires a spiritual friend. He desires the different spiritual friends of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas,

Moreover, those sons of good family who are Hearers and Solitary Realizers should also be properly encouraged towards unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, and made to enter and abide therein. If they wish so, they will be born in those realms where the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones reside, live, nourish, and exist, and will remain focused on the Buddha day and night. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because those irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas mostly generate attention corresponding to the desire realm, abide in the path of the ten virtuous actions, and thus will be born in those Buddha-fields where the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones manifest, reside, and nourish. They will generate and enter into the first dhyana up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and thus will be born in those places where the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones manifest, reside, and nourish. Subhuti, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who possess these forms, these signs, these characteristics, should be recognized as irreversible, and this is the forbearance of knowing the Dharma on the path.
