It is called acceptance of non-arising. O Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics should be known as irreversible. This is the Dharma-knowledge-acceptance of suffering on the path of seeing. Furthermore, O Subhuti, an evil Mara approaches a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, causing them to turn back, (saying,) "This all-knowingness is like space, the nature of no-thingness is empty by its own nature. These dharmas are also like space, the nature of no-thingness is empty by its own nature. Thus, since all dharmas are like space, empty of the nature of no-thingness, one does not perceive what attains complete enlightenment, by what one attains complete enlightenment, and what are the dharmas by which one should attain complete enlightenment. Since all these dharmas are like space, empty of the nature of no-thingness, by their own nature, thus, thinking 'I shall attain complete enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment,' you will become pointlessly afflicted. This is what Mara has taught. This is not what the perfectly enlightened Buddha has taught. Therefore, son of good family, do not engage in those mental activities for a long time in a way that is unhelpful and meaningless, lest you fall into suffering and wrong views." If they say this, then the son or daughter of good family of the Bodhisattva vehicle, having heard those words, should consider thus: "Thus, turning me away from unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment is the work of Mara. Although all dharmas are like space, empty of the nature of no-thingness, by their own nature, beings have not known, have not seen, have not understood them. Therefore, I should don the armor that is like space, empty of the nature of no-thingness, by its own nature, and having attained complete enlightenment in all-knowingness, I will teach the Dharma to all beings. I will thoroughly establish immeasurable beings in the fruit of stream-entry."

should rejoice. One should rejoice in the fruit of once-returner, in the fruit of non-returner, and in the Arhat himself. One should rejoice in self-awakening. One should rejoice in the unsurpassed, perfectly complete awakening. Thereupon, from the time that Bodhisattva Mahasattva first generates the mind, having taken up these dharmas, one should make the mind firm. One should make the mind unmoving. One should make the mind un-stealable. By possessing a firm mind, an unmoving mind, and an un-stealable mind, if one practices the perfections, the Bodhisattva will enter without fault, this is known as knowing the dharma about suffering. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back called non-turning back, or is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who turns back called non-turning back? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back is called non-turning back. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, for what reason is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back called non-turning back? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, whichever Bodhisattva Mahasattva turns away from the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, that, Subhuti, is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back, and is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back. Subhuti, whichever Bodhisattva Mahasattva turns away from the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, that, Subhuti, is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who turns back. Subhuti, one should recognize the nature of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who does not turn back by those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics. It is the tolerance of following the knowledge of suffering. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes, he can enter the first dhyana. He can enter up to the fourth dhyana. He can enter cessation. If a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes, he can enter the four mindfulnesses. He can enter into the right exertion, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the paths. He can enter into emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness samadhi. He can achieve the five superknowledges. He becomes familiar with the four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, and the four formless attainments. He becomes accustomed to the mindfulnesses. He can enter into the right exertion, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness samadhi. He does not hold onto the fruit of meditation. He does not hold onto the fruit of entering into cessation. He does not hold onto the fruit of entering the stream. He does not hold onto the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, and the state of Arhatship. He does not hold onto the self-enlightenment. If he wishes, he can deliberately contemplate and hold onto the body, holding onto such a body that can accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those forms, those signs, and those characteristics should be known as non-retrogressing, which is the following knowledge of suffering. Furthermore, Subhuti, a non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses the thought of enlightenment, is inseparable from the mind of enlightenment, and does not cling to form, does not cling to characteristics, does not cling to the body, does not cling to generosity, does not cling to discipline, does not cling to patience, does not cling to diligence.
