Will be grasped. Will be completely grasped by skillful means. Will be completely grasped by the perfection of meditation, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of patience, the perfection of discipline, and the perfection of generosity. Likewise, when completely grasped up to the state of omniscience, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not fall into the grounds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. This is called the second instant of the faultless, excellent path. Subhuti, for example, there is a man who is one hundred and twenty years old, decrepit, aged, and frail. His body is afflicted by wind, bile, phlegm, or some combination of diseases. Subhuti, what do you think of this? Can that unstable man walk by himself? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, no. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, can that man even rise slightly from his bed? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, that man can rise from his bed, but he cannot walk a distance of one yojana. Because he is old and frail, although he can rise from his bed, he cannot walk. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, likewise, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has faith, patience, joy, and great delight for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, He also has superior intention, desire, faith, aspiration, and non-abandonment. He also does not abandon diligence. However, if he is not grasped by the perfection of wisdom, not grasped by skillful means, not grasped by the perfection of meditation, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of patience, the perfection of discipline, and the perfection of generosity, not grasped by inner emptiness and emptiness of the nature of non-things, not grasped by mindfulness, not grasped by right abandonment, miraculous feet, faculties, and powers,

If the branches and the path are not completely grasped, if the immeasurable, the meditative concentration, the formless attainments, and the noble truths are not completely grasped, if emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness are not completely grasped, if the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, and the unmixed qualities of the Buddha are not completely grasped, then, Subhuti, that bodhisattva should be known to fall into the stage of a Hearer or a Solitary Realizer in the intermediate state. Why is that? It is because they are not completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, not completely grasped by skillful means, and not completely grasped by the interval of that all-knowingness. Subhuti, just as, for example, a person who has reached the age of one hundred and twenty years, who is decrepit, old, and frail, is afflicted by wind, bile, phlegm, or a combination of diseases, and if they want to rise from their bed, then two strong men hold them by their left and right sides and support them, saying, "Hey, man! Where do you want to go for the sake of what pleases you? We will hold you, and you will not be afraid of stumbling and decaying in the intermediate state on that path until you reach the place we are holding you to," just as they advise. Subhuti, a bodhisattva mahasattva who has faith, patience, joy, great joy, higher intention, desire, conviction, aspiration, non-abandonment, and non-abandonment of diligence for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and who is completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, completely grasped by skillful means, completely grasped by the Perfection of Meditative Concentration, completely grasped by the Perfection of Diligence, completely grasped by the Perfection of Patience, completely grasped by the Perfection of Morality, completely grasped by the Perfection of Generosity, and completely grasped by the interval between inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, and the emptiness of the nature of non-things, Subhuti, that bodhisattva mahasattva will not regress in the intermediate state.

Thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is able to reach the state of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because in that way, he is not separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means. Subhuti (Rab-'byor) asked: World-Honored One, if a son or daughter of a noble family of the Bodhisattva Vehicle is not fully grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and not fully grasped by skillful means, will they fall into the ground of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha? The World-Honored One replied: Subhuti, it is good, good that you ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha about this matter in this way. Subhuti, in this case, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva initially gives whatever he gives, also gives with a mind that clings to self and what belongs to self; whatever precepts he keeps, whatever patience he cultivates, whatever effort he makes, whatever concentration he enters into, and whatever wisdom he cultivates, he also cultivates with a mind that clings to self and what belongs to self. When he fully gives alms, he thinks to himself: I am fully giving alms. I am fully giving such alms. I am giving alms to these people. I am fully keeping the precepts. I am keeping such precepts. I am one who possesses precepts. I am cultivating patience. I am perfecting patience. I am one who possesses patience. I am making effort. I am making such effort. I am one who possesses effort. I am entering into concentration. I am a meditator. I am one who possesses concentration. I am cultivating wisdom. I am cultivating such wisdom. Thinking thus, he becomes arrogant with that almsgiving. He becomes arrogant with almsgiving. He becomes arrogant, saying, "I am giving alms." Similarly, he becomes arrogant with precepts, patience, effort, concentrations, and wisdom. He becomes arrogant with wisdom. I am
