To the west, to the north, upwards, downwards, and in the intermediate directions, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, countless beings are practicing towards unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. However, because they do not possess the skillful means of the Perfection of Wisdom, only one or two of them will abide in the stage of non-retrogression, while most will be seen to abide in the stages of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Why is that? Kauśika, unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment is difficult to achieve by those who are lazy, have weak diligence, weak faith, weak mind, and corrupt wisdom. This is the intermediate state of having little faith in one's own benefit. Kauśika, therefore, any son or daughter of good family who wishes to quickly and easily attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment should repeatedly listen to this Perfection of Wisdom. It should be taken up, it should be held, it should be recited, it should be fully understood, it should be thoroughly practiced, it should be completely questioned, it should be properly contemplated. It should be honored with many offerings of flowers, incense, perfume, garlands, ointments, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, and pennants. It should be respected, it should be venerated. All other virtuous dharmas are also included within this Perfection of Wisdom, and therefore they should also be taken up, held, recited, fully understood, and properly contemplated. For example, the Perfection of Giving, the Perfection of Ethics, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Meditation, the Perfection of Wisdom, as well as inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, emptiness of the nature of non-things, up to all samādhis, all dhāraṇī gates, the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the noble path.

the eight branches, the four immeasurables, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, the six superknowledges, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, great love, great compassion, and also whatever other immeasurable qualities of a Buddha are included in this Perfection of Wisdom, those also should be taken up, should be held, should be attended to properly. Why is that? Kauśika, it is like this: those sons of good family or daughters of good family will come to know that when the Thus-Gone One formerly practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, it was also like this: the Perfection of Wisdom, the Perfection of Concentration, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Ethics, the Perfection of Giving, emptiness of what is internal, emptiness of what is external, emptiness of what is internal and external, emptiness of the nature of non-things, all samādhis, all dhāraṇī gates, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the four immeasurables, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, the six superknowledges, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, great love, great compassion, and also for the sake of training in other immeasurable qualities of a Buddha, we also should train here. This Perfection of Wisdom, whether the Thus-Gone One remains or passes completely into nirvāṇa, this is our teacher. A Bodhisattva Mahāsattva should thoroughly propagate this very Perfection of Wisdom, this is a great intention of small self-interest. Then the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, a son of good family or a daughter of good family,

How much merit will increase by making offerings to the Perfection of Wisdom, acting as a teacher, showing respect, and making offerings? Chapter Thirty-one. The Blessed One said: Kauśika, son of a noble family or daughter of a noble family, if someone, after the Tathāgata's complete nirvāṇa, in order to make offerings, builds a stupa of seven precious materials, one krosha in height, and having built it, until the end of their life, surrounds it with divine flowers, incense, scents, garlands, ointments, powders, religious robes, umbrellas, banners, and many flags, making offerings, acting as a teacher, showing respect, and making offerings, Kauśika, what do you think of that? Will the merit of that son of a noble family or daughter of a noble family increase greatly because of that? Indra replied: Blessed One, it will increase greatly. Sugata, it will increase greatly. The Blessed One said: Kauśika, even more than that, if a son of a noble family or daughter of a noble family writes, holds, recites, understands this Perfection of Wisdom, properly contemplates it, and also extensively teaches it to others, without separating from the mind endowed with all-knowingness, making offerings with flowers, incense, scents, garlands, ointments, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, and many flags, acting as a teacher, showing respect, and making offerings, then their merit will increase even more. This is the lesser of the middling aspiration for one's own benefit. Kauśika, let alone a stupa of the nature of precious jewels! Kauśika, son of a noble family or daughter of a noble family, after the Tathāgata's complete nirvāṇa, in order to make offerings, in this Jambudvipa, builds a stupa of the nature of seven precious materials, one krosha in height, completely filling it, and then makes offerings with divine flowers, incense, scents, garlands, ointments, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, and many flags, acting as a teacher, showing respect, making offerings, remembering, and honoring, Kauśika, what do you think of that?
