Did the merit of those daughters of good family increase because of that cause? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, it increased. Well-Gone One, it increased. Blessed One, it is like this, there is no measure, no number, it is immeasurable, and it is difficult to make an example of that object of merit. Blessed One, if that object of merit were a material thing, it would not fit even in all the world systems as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. After he said that, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, well done, well done! Subhuti, you are good! Just as you said, Subhuti, even more than that, the son or daughter of good family who dedicates those roots of virtue with non-attachment, dedicating them completely to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, their merit increases greatly. Subhuti, in that case, the dedication of the roots of virtue of that son or daughter of good family is called excellent. It is called supreme. It is called principal. It is called best. It is called most excellent. It is called most distinguished. It is called unsurpassed. It is called incomparable. Subhuti, the former merit does not even come close to one part in a hundred of this mass of merit of non-attached dedication. One part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a koti, one part in a hundred kotis, one part in a thousand kotis, one part in a hundred thousand koti krakriks, number, part, counting, example, comparison, or cause, it cannot be tolerated. Why is that? It is because the son or daughter of good family, any sentient being, who is endowed with the ten paths of virtuous action, the four immeasurables, the four concentrations, the four formless absorptions, and the five clairvoyances, those are with the perception of an object. Why is that? It is because the son or daughter of good family, any sentient being, all those who have become stream-enterers, up to becoming arhats, all sentient beings who have become solitary buddhas, offering them robes and alms.

Beds and bedding, medicinal ingredients for illnesses, and many implements are used to serve, regarded as a lama, considered a dwelling, offered, and revered with all means of comfort. This is one who has a concept of an object. Thus, serving a Bodhisattva, regarding them as a lama, considering them a dwelling, and offering to them, all these are because they have an object. This is called the great dedication that brings forth great merit. Then, the Four Great Kings, twenty thousand sons of the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, with palms joined, prostrated to the Bhagavan and said this: O Bhagavan, whatever skillful means there are, dedicating those roots of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment in a way that is without an object, without attachment, and without characteristics, and in no way will it become two, nor will it become not two, such a dedication is endowed with the great dedication of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, together with the sons of the gods of the retinue of the Thirty-three, struck many divine musical instruments of divine flowers, incense, garlands, unguents, powders, garments, parasols, victory banners, and flags, and having made offerings to the Bhagavan, spoke these words: O Bhagavan, whatever skillful means there are, with this way of being without an object, without attachment, and without characteristics, dedicating those roots of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and in no way will it become two, nor will it become not two, such a dedication is endowed with the great dedication of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Then, the sons of the gods, Very Content, Joyful, Delightful Transformation, and Controlling Others' Transformations, together with many thousands of sons of the gods, spoke these words to the Bhagavan: O Bhagavan, whatever skillful means there are, with this way of being without an object
